My friend was trying to upgrade from OS 2.1 to 0S 3.0 on his 2G iphone when a error came up and says springboard crashed and now the home screen is gray and says safe mode on the top center and Idea or should i contact apple he is coming up tonight and wants me to look at it..

Safe Mode is a fall back safe state of the MobileSubstrate. It was designed so that if you had an error you could use the device and get back into Cydia and remove the offending software.

If it only happens once then it is not really anything to worry about but if it happens lots then it is something you want to look in to. A reboot does clear it.

Your friend has jailbroken his iPhone and as such apple won't be of any use.

I tried rebooting it and does the same he said he didnt jailbreak it but he bought it off of someone else but his Icons on the home screen looks different to what im used to.. Itunes Icon was a blue color,

Sounds like it was jailbroken when he bought it. Does it have Cydia/Installer/Icy on it?
