i have been installing and using apps fine until recently when i switch from english to chinese, iphone goes into safe mode saying 'springboard has crashed...', so i have to press 'restart' to reload springboard.

i have been researching all morning but did not find anything particularly useful. at one forum, someone suggested maybe running out of disk space, so i even deleted some of the apps. yet, it still crashes when i switch languages.

however, when i power on/off the phone, the crash does not happen. i really hate to restore and phone and to re-install all the apps. i remember i have been using SSH & cyberduck to modify files and i wonder is SSH is the culprit.

i would appreciate if anyone has any input about this or if anyone has the same issue as i. i have a 2G iPhone running v2.1

My phone went into safe mode quite often with 2.1, but it hasn't happened since I upgradeded to 2.2. You should upgrade. 2.2 is faster and much more stable, especially if you JB.

well, i was hoping upgrading to 2.2 is not the only option since when i upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2, phone will be locked and i will have to unlock and jb again. which is really no different than uninstall winterboard and reload all the apps, right?

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean here....
Do you mean that you don't want to update because you don't want to have to re-jailbreak? If thats what you mean, then I guess you'll just have to deal with the problems you are having.

Don't be lazy! :p j/k

It is really worth the small amount of time for you to restore, update, and install your custom FW with pwnage. 2.2 has been treating me much better than 2.1.

a friend of mine told me version 2.2 has alot of bugs and also the battery life for the iphone seems degraded. so i am just holding out until all the bugs have been resolved.

i supposed i could re-jailbreak using pwnage 2.1 thereby cleaning up everything and i can re-install everything.

Well, I suppose you should trust someone you know over a stranger like me, but your friend is wrong. I have had better battery life, no springboard crashes (safe mode), less crashes in safari, more general stability, and winterboard is a million times better on 2.2.

If you just don't believe me, then check out these other threads with people attesting to 2.2's superiority:

The upgrade has solved the safe mode problem for me.
Anyway, I'm done trying to convince you.

Good luck! :D
