Sprint 4G rollout Impressive. A 2010 play for iPhone 4G/iTablet?

I'm here in Atlanta where Sprint's 4G is available. I've used it and it is lightening FAST. Their rollout in 2009 was:

Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Dallas; Fort Worth,Texas; Honolulu; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; and Seattle. Portland, Ore.,

2010 targets are Boston; Houston; New York; San Francisco; and Washington, D.C.

If Apple begins to offer CDMA based iPhones/iTablets, Sprint is more likely to snag the deal than Verizon.

iPhone 4G on a 4G network would be STUNNING!
 
Sprint's using WiMax for their 4G, right? AFAIK, nobody else is using that technology. AT&T and Verizon are going to use LTE for their 4G networks.

Yeah I guess the point is WiMax gonna be in 15-20 markets. Where is LTE?

Verizon has plans for 25-30 markets in 2010, so I guess it's coming.

If Apple hasn't shown any interest in making a CDMA iPhone for Sprint/Verizon, I guess I just really don't see them making a WiMax iPhone for just Sprint.

I think everyone's expecting the 4G iPhone to be LTE and work on both Verizon and AT&T's upcoming 4G LTE networks.

But who the heck knows. Apple does weird crap all of the time. :)
 
I don't know that this move would place Sprint over Verizon. Verizon shot themselves in the foot with the recent advertising, in which even Apple responded. The simple fact is that Verizon has the largest network and consistently gets the highest grades, this would seem like a much more logical choice if Apple decides to go CDMA in the U.S. I still believe that if the iPhone does go CDMA, which I don't really see happening next year, it will go to Verizon - only because of the two aforementioned facts.

I believe so, since here in Portland, ads for Clear WiMax and Sprint 4G started showing up at similar times.
....
Doing some looking around, it appears Sprint owns 51% of Clear.;)

It's a totally different system from either of those, but it's designed so it can coexist with older networks if carrier and radio support is added.

Assuming your device has the necessary older radios, it should be able to handoff from LTE back to CDMA or GSM networks ... similar to the way that current GSM phones can switch from their 3G WCDMA radio to their older 2G TDMA radio.
 
Forget it, the big carriers are going to use LTE (and than I'm talking about the rest of the world, not just the USA).
 
No way Apple is going to tie itself to the Betamax of 4G standards, not when the rest of the world will be on LTE in a couple of years. Everything Apple has so far done with the iPhone has been toward world-wide penetration with a single device. I think it's a wise move and I don't think it's likely to change. They might build a dual-standard 3G iPhone (CDMA2000 & WCDMA), but I wouldn't expect it to support WiMax.
 
Isn't AT&T's most issues for 3G with San Fran and NY? Wonder how many people would go with a Mifi or equivalent and move to VoIP once their contracts run out?
