I saw on the news today that sprint and verizon could possibly get the iPhone, and I really want one but was waiting untill it was available to sprint.
Is this true? if it is when will sprint announce that they are getting the iPhone?

this too

Verizon in the fall. Sprint -- not much speculation there.

is speculation! possible but in the fall perhaps at WWDC more will be known! this rumor was out last year along with the 3GS would have a camera in front HD and multitasking wait that's the same things they are saying for the 4G!

Another iPhone on x thread?

Yes.

Been frustrated with my phone and was thinking about getting a cheaper plan from another carrier. I was told when I called in to cancel my sprint service on Friday that they would be getting the iphone first week of June 2010. I take all these with a grain of salt but there have been talks about the iPhone coming to a CDMA network. The rep said a formal announcement was coming this month.

When I told him I preferred a phone with a full keyboard and just wanted to cancel. He did say he was more than happy to process my cancellation and he did not press the matter further. Now that brings two things to mind:

#1 - if you are just saying anything to keep a customer why not recommend another Sprint phone that has a full QWERTY keyboard.

#2 - if you are going to try to save a business customer like myself why not mention blackberry or another business platform product as well?

He sounded a little overly excited about telling me this like a kid on Christmas. My bet from how he sounded, younger tech savy kid, who found out new info, and wanted to share with someone. Again I take these with a grain of salt but still . . .

My bet on iPhone coming to Verizon 5 to 1

My bet on iPhone coming to Sprint 1:1.

lol

I can call almost any customer service rep or talk to a sales person on any carrier!

I say gee I love to be with XYZ carrier but you have no Iphone! so I going with the other guys!

of course XYZ people are going to say oh wait we are getting Iphone too!

powerinfused I'll take your bet!

Easiest $ I ever won :)

I am a former network engineer for Verizon and also have a couple friends who work here locally in the Sprint Call Center in a suburb of Sacramento. Former colleagues from the former and friends from the latter both were surprised when Apple went with ATT. But that deal makes sense for a couple reasons.

Money, money, money. Who is going to give Apple the best deal?

Sprint is losing money right now. It's no question not update for debate. They are bleeding subscribers. This is an on-going cyclical tradition for Sprint. This is why Apple and Sprint would be a perfect pairing.

Apple wants a good partner who will have a strong network. Sprint is launching their 4G now. Verizon soon.

Sprint NEEDS subscribers. Cash on hand has always been a problem for sprint in addition to overpriced phones and offering mail in rebates as opposed to instant rebates in hopes people will not cash them and they can pocket the $. Having a 4G iPhone would be the perfect announcement to coincide with a larger 4G roll-out.

Am I thinking Verizon will be left out of the big picture, no. But who would really have thought as ATT as the first choice to begin with?

Interesting points. Makes sense. In the end I think it all comes down to what kind of deal Apple can extract from either Sprint and/or Verizon. Maybe they'd do both, as long as they're making a CDMA phone. Maybe one or the other. Seems to me that as long as they're making a new phone on CDMA, they'd want to get it the broadest play possible before the paradigm changes again. I was thinking Verizon and China Telecom, but you make a reasonable case for Sprint.

Exclusivity

has anyone ever wondered that something else altogether may be blocking Verizon and/or Sprint from getting the iPhone? do we know that Verizon does not have some exclusive contract with Motorola? or Palm? or even some back room deal with Google? and even if the iPhone did end up with Verizon this summer how many new iphones will Verizon sell to it's existing customers who aren't already locked into a droid? How many Verizon Customers are actually holding out from buying a smart phone in hopes of getting a Verizon iPhone? IMO an iPhone on Sprint's network is the least likely...I believe Apple wil eventually produce a CDMA device (FOR CHINA) and Verizon Customers will have to import and unlock to use here...just my theory...stating that Apple "has" to make a verizon iPhone because of the larger subscription base is like arguing that Apple has to make PC esque devices because more people use PC's as opposed to Macs and Apple stands to make more money as a result...maybe Apple should...but they WON'T...oh and At&T's network is fast and reliable in Houston and most places along the gulf coast..in fact I've had full 3G Everywhere I've been: Houston, Dallas, all of southeast Texas, San Antonio, Louisiana (almost every city), Atlanta, Florida, San Diego, Oakland, and St. Louis...and when there was no 3G there was alwyas 5 bars of edge... perhaps I'm lucky?

the whole CDMA deal has been brought up before!

China has a different whole different radio and the CDMA are incompatible so even if they do one for China does not mean Sprint and Verizon are getting it. I'd say if anybody will get the Iphone next logically it would be T-mobile but talk all you want only time will tell! ;) and you can find other articles from Verizion saying different! but Sprint would be Apples last choice! Gee lets go to a network that sucks worse then AT&T! where is this a good business plan!

Motorola, Blackberry...numerous mfgrs have shown us that the CDMA/GSM hardware problems are completely and cost-effectively solved. I suspect the return on investment and positioning for the future would make developing a CDMA phone with the next hardware iteration a smart thing to do.

I sincerely hope Verizon gets a crack at it. I am tired of ATT's tyranny. Sprint is mediocre, and has relatively poor coverage, but you can bet that if Verizon gets the iPhone, someone will devise a method that allows Sprint users the same.

I believe the radio frequency for their data network is completely different. I think a fully-functional Sprint phone would need to be purpose-built.
