My buddy is trying to restore his sprint iphone 5s since he is having battery problems. He has always done OTA firmware updates so he wants to try a fresh restore.

He has gone to this website to get the ipsw file.
http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

He chooses this file for his sprint iphone 5s

8.1.1 (5s GSM+CDMA): iPhone6,2_8.1.1_12B435_Restore.ipsw

However, when it tries to do a restore on his Windows itunes he gets the following message.

"The firmware is not compatible."

What is he doing wrong or what file should he be using?

If he clicks restore in iTunes it will download the correct firmware automatically. No need to download it from a third party.

there are two cdma models. the sprint one is a1453 and verizon is a1533
however. there is a1533 gsm and a a1533 cdma

they are all identified as iPhone 6,2 making it hard to choose which one

maybe you needed
iPhone6,1_8.1.1_12B435_Restore.ipsw and not 6,2

yeah. like tyler23 said. theres no real reason to go download ispws and just let itunes do it. but i like to keep my ispws in case i need to restore down the road
and we have the slowest uverse here and it can take 3 hours to download a new ispw. i figure its like "install os x .app " and you should save it in case you need it again

make sure your ispw site has direct links to apple's server
