A good friend of mine runs a speed testing site. He received his WiFi-only iPad yesterday and wrote me with his initial impressions. Among that review was this:

My experiment with the Sprint 4G Overdrive portable router was disappointing. The speeds averaged about 150kbps download and 600kbps upload. Just like the iPhone, the iPad and Overdrive don't play nice together at least when it comes to download speed. I'm told by an Apple engineer that it has something to do with "conflicting efficiency algorithms."

It's really not...other single device at a time USB data cards are $60 a month, this one gives you unlimited 4G service plus the same amount of 3G for the same price.

At $60.00 per month I would get the 3G iPad and pay AT&T $30.00 per month. Sprint's 4G, where available, is slower than AT&T's new 3G. 3 to 6 Mbps (Sprint's advertisement) vs. 7.2 Mbps. My iPhone has had a substantial increase in download speeds in the past 4 months. Although, with the iPhone and iPad, it would be the same price, I've never had a reliability problem with AT&T. I've been with them for over 10 years, probably closer to 15 years.

I have never seen anything close to 7Mbps with AT&T's 3G network. The fastest I've seen is 2Mbps. More often it's a lot closer to 200 to 600Kbps.

The Sprint 4G Overdrive is measuring between 2.5 to 4.5Mbps in every day use in our town with the iPad. On the MacBook Pro, I'm seeing has high as 6Mbps. And since it supports up to 5 devices, the cost per device is as low as $12/mo -- or much lower than AT&T's $30/mo per device.

However, I concede that once AT&T gets their 4G (LTE) network operational, it's very likely they will meet or exceed the performance I'm seeing on Sprint's 4G (WiMAX).

Sprint's 4G coverage is only available in like 6 states, one of them oddly being Hawaii, no offense. So... Based on that I'll be waiting with my fingers crossed for a AT&T tethering option.... :/

Actually looks like a pretty nice case, although I consider any iPad case that's unable to prop it up at an angle fairly useless.
