What is the fastest CPU that a 24" SR IMAC can handle, currently it has the Merom 7700, I was wondering if an upgrade to the 7800(2.6ghz) ot the X7900(2.8ghz but 44W) were feasible as both are Merom. Another option would be a T9500 (2.6ghz but Peryn) or a X9000 (2.8ghz Peryn)

Update:
I did some digging around in google, yes I can upgarde to the 7800 or X7900 but now the real question is if the SR IMACS will take a Peryn CPU(the 800mhz bus varierty, in effect the T9500 or X9000) They are the same speed as the Meroms but have 6mb cache(vs 4mb) and should be cooler at 45nm (vs65nm)

Thanks

Hexus.net "upgraded" a 24 in iMac with the X7900 Core 2 Duo to the Penryn X9000. It worked....after a fashion. The machine booted but was much slower as the iMac sensed the new processor as 400 Mhz with benchmarks to prove it. :( Apparently, there are some kinks to be worked out.

I'd make sure that someone has actually done your proposed upgrade, with appropriate benchmarks showing functionality. Alternatively, you could sell your machine and buy a newer machine with the faster processor and the faster bus. But where's the fun in that? I'm also not one to let practicality get in my way, if there are more complicated ways to do things.
