I assume you mean that the finder is non-responsive and giving you the "spinning beach ball" upon awakening from sleep?
Are you changing locations (i.e. taking the computer from home to work) while the computer is asleep? Do you have drives from networked computers mounted at the time of putting the computer to sleep?
Both of these items can cause the behavior you are seeing. This is a known networking "bug." Your computer expects to be in the same environment upon awakening as when it went to sleep. The computer can take a heck of a long time sorting itself out (?10 minutes?), but it will eventually sort things out.
To avoid this unnecessary delay...
If you are going to move the computer from one location to another, unmount the networked drives and disconnect from the internet prior to putting the computer asleep.
Note: I am sure of the information above, I am not so sure of the following; The unresponsive finder may occur if your networked drives are no longer you accessible upon your computers waking from sleep even if you do not change locations (e.g., the networked computers had been turned off while your computer was asleep, etc).
