Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my Mac mini's ram and to an ssd. Currently I've used up to 250 gb on my HDD. The ram upgrade is easy, 8GB. But the SSD is another thing. Money isn't too big of an issue. I would like plenty of storage. For best performance should I get a 500gb ssd(yea I know over $1000) or a smaller SSD, say 80gb as boot disk and use external HDD for more storage. And is there any places I can get my HDD replaced for cheap? Thanks.

Get a small SSD and external HD for storage. IMO it's pointless to pay much for an SSD because you won't really notice the difference between HD and SSD if you're storing music, videos and stuff in there. The cheapest way to do it is to do it yourself. If you don't want to, then ask from resellers

How would I go about setting my SSD to boot disk and use an external HDD for the rest of storage? I heard it's difficult to DIY. Can you link a simple DIY for this replacement?

You can move your home folder so all things you download or import go to the external HD

What Mini do you have? It's not very easy but saves you a lot $

Thanks. This is gonna help a lot.

If you don't use your optical drive you could convert it into a SSD bay, and say have a 60GB boot SSD disk in the normal HD bay, and a 500GB normal HD in the OD bay :) Then you could get an external DVD drive and sit it on top of the mini. I mean, its not like the mini will be going anywhere, and its faster than an external HD :)

I thought your couldn't do that with the min. Can you link it to something.

When someone makes a 2gb 2.5 drive that will fit in the mini, this will be exactly my plan for my 2010 mini. Don't want to use an external drive.

Do you mean replacing the optical drive?

Replacing the optical with a ssd and installing a 2gb drive. I need 2TB as my movie collection and photos are quite large. Not fond of using external drives.
