SSD Direct swap ?? Yes/No ?

Once in a while I do have a question myself, today is such a day.. :roll eyes:

I finally got a mint condition Mac Pro 5,1 6-core model myself.
After a small upgrade it should be ready to rock. Since I have the SSD Evo in my sig, I decided to put it on a Sonnet Tempo PCI card for a boot drive.

Here is the question:
The OS X on the SSD Laptop system is Yosemite. I would rather love to just swap the drive from the Macbook 2010 into the Mac Pro WITHOUT erasing everything on it - "hence a direct swap". Is this possible or advisable?


I would hate to go the proper way and go through a fresh install with TimeCapsule backup and all that "SCM reset fuss" ?
Do I have to, -or can I just get away with a direct swap as described, bolting it on the Sonnet and be done with it..

I would question the use of Sonnet Tempo.

SSD - I would try it first in standard drive bay, clone it (ccc and so you have a bootable backup)

Yes it should work. In the past running a combo update would sometimes help.

I would do a Safe Boot the first time.

EVO 850 seem to have lowered their price on Amazon this week ($99 250HB)

Between CCC and Startup Assistant, there was / should not be / much trouble - even if you had to do clean install.

Only reason for SMC Reset has nothing to do with clean install, but does when adding, moving or changing hardware (PCIe card/controller or such); or, if there is a problem with hardware or devices getting listed and loaded (NVRAM).

I would question the use of Sonnet Tempo.

Me too. Look into an Apricorn Velocity Solo or Duo x2. And yes your Mac Pro should work just fine with the transplanted EVO without erasing, reinitializing, and reinstalling the OS and applications.
