It isn't important anyway. Apple only offers SATA-2 and aftermarket drives do not work in 2011 iMacs.

Then dont answer the question buddy. Almost every post you add to this site is nothing short of sarcastic.

Are you sure? I thought i have read that numerous people on this forum installed their own aftermarket SSDs.

He's not the only person who has something to say about asking a question that has all ready been asked. How difficult is it to search through the forum first?

It takes you just as long to type your sarcastic posts as it does to answer the question. So why are you posting if it annoys you?

Some market 3G and 6G SSDs work fine in the iMac. I prefer the SandForce based models from OCZ and OWC. However if a factory HDD isn't present in the 3.5" slot, the fans go crazy. In other words, dual SSDs internally will technically work, but the iMac will be noisy.

My strategy is to stick with the factory HDD but add a 6Gb/s SSD in the 2.5" slot. I didn't order it with the factory SSD (since I didn't want to wait 6 weeks), but I understand the mounting bracket, power cable, and data cable are missing if you order just the HDD. So I bought the missing pieces from AppleComponents.com. See install instructions and part numbers here:

Badger^2, what do you base this answer on? So far I haven't seen any reports on what OEM SSDs come in the new iMacs (given Apple's 4-6 week delay in shipping them).

Cost.

Even the least expensive SATA II 256 gig drives are close to $500.

The way Apple upcharges on drives and ram -- I bet SATA II.

IF they ship with SATA III, I think 99% of Mac users -- me included -- would be pretty shocked.

This.

They aren't even shipping yet. No one has got one and therefore no one can answer your question yet.

This question has been asked. Do your homework! There was an article on the news page YESTERDAY about this. Short answer is it doesn't work.

Due to your rudeness, i will be posting a new thread that was already asked and answered that same day for the next month seeing as you are so bothered by it you felt the need to post. Enjoy the new threads.

And it takes you just the same amount of time to search through the forums and for articles on the web instead of pestering and trolling the community. No need for you get defensive because you fail to see what's in front of you.

Is that the definition of troll? You may want to educate yourself newbie. I am off to create a new thread about a current topic that has already been asked and answered tons of times.... Enjoy!

No one knows if the SSD's Apple will be using are SATA 2 or SATA 3 drives. The motherboard can certainly handle the SATA 3 drives.

Talking with them and the reasons for the delay, they told me they are waiting for the firmware for the controller for the SSD. I ordered a 21.5 i7 2.8 with SSD and have a ship time of May 27th, deliver June 1st.

We shall see then.

Thanks Badger^2, makes sense.

These threads are getting sillier. Yes, aftermarket SSD do work and so do aftermarkets HDD. The article form OWC is incomplete and ignores the fact that there are so many people out there who already replaced the HDDs on macs that passed the AHT successfully with nu speeding fans an all that bull.

Exactly. There is an entire thread here about people installing aftermarket drives in their 2011 iMacs. OWC is off the mark with this.

Please. Next time if you feel the new topic has been asked politely, just give one link for OP to observe. No need to be rude. Everyone's happy that way.

Let's be mature folks, we hate trollers, aren't we?

Let's not end up being one
