SSD - Install OSX as well as all Apps?

I'm going to get a SSD for my new 27" iMac, core i7. I know to install OSX on the SSD, and I's also like to install all my apps, including CS5 suite on the SSD as well. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do that?

I'm tired of waiting for the CS5 suite to open, I want speed!

It's your machine, you can do whatever you want with it. However if you put PS on teh SSD and keep all the files you're working with on the other drive, you're not really saving much time...

The SSD is 256GB so you would be stupid to just use it for OS X as that takes ~5GB. I would install all apps to the SSD and even store some work files there if the need fast access

Thats what I was thinking. Although, I'm not getting a 256gb, I'm looking at a 60gb or a 120 from OWC. Still plenty of room to install OSX, Apps and current projects.

OWC has a good rep for their equipment from what I can tell. Any other suggestions for a SSD? Trying to keep it under $300-$400

Are you installing it yourself? If so, I would get OCZ Vertex 2. It's the same drive as OWC but with different firmware and you will save some $.

Hmm, interesting, that's $60 cheaper. So its the same drive as the 120gb OWC Mercury Extreme Pro? Although, there are numerous reviews on newegg that say it died quickly.

Yes. They both use the SandForce 1200 controller and have equivalent performance. Plenty of Mac owners have Vertex 2

Is there an easy way to install the OS and all my apps on the SSD without manually installing each app by itself. I use CCC to clone my HD so I have an external bootbable drive with all my aps and the OS. Is there a way to easily move just the OS and my apps to the SSD once I get it installed in my iMac? And yes, I'm going to install the SSD myself.

You can install the OS X from install disc and then just drag&drop the Applications folder to your SSD. Some bigger apps such as Photoshop may require reinstalling but most apps should work fine.

I have not used CCC but I know SuperDuper will just copy the image you have backed up of your entire HDD directly to the SSD and you will be up and running very quickly. Just boot to your backed up partition drive and restore the saved partition/image. A clean install is sometimes nice to have though.

The image from CCC is of my entire drive, I only want the OS and apps. I can easily install OSX from the disc but dont want to install all individual apps.

I do think some apps will work if I drag and drop, but I know the CS5 suite wont. Is there way to only backup the OSX and apps? Then I could make an image of that and use CCC to set up the new SSD from that image.

Exclude the users folder from the backup as shown in the picture below (Käyttäjät = Users in Finnish)

That way it should backup the OS X and apps but leave out all your personal files such as photos and music

Perfect! Thanks man! I'm excited, now I just have to order my SSD and be careful while installing. I saw the post made awhile back by Youds (sp?) with a detailed description on how to do it. Should be ok ...
