My 2012 mini should be arriving in a couple of days. I will get an ssd for it, I just don't know if I want to open it to install the ssd. I've seen that several people damaged the fan connectors. I think uasp usb enclosure is a good alternative. Any opinions? I did upgrade the ssd on my 24 imac so maybe I should toughen up and open up the mini?

Suggestion, my opinion only.

Get the SSD of your choice, and get a USB3/SATA docking station that supports UASP.

Put the SSD in it and run like that for a while.

If you find yourself dissatisfied with the performance, just "do the surgery" and put the SSD inside.
You will then have the docking station to use as you wish -- put a backup drive into it, use it to "swap extra drives around", etc.

But I think you'll be quite pleased with the performance of the SSD -in- the USB3 dock...
