Hi all!

I have just joined the forum and look forward to speaking with you!

I debated posting on here as I know there are already a lot of threads about booting from external SSD drives to speed up the iMac. (I have an iMac late 2013).

I am a little nervous about opening up the iMac to replace with an internal SSD, but the more videos I watch, taking my time, think I could do it. Taking the screen off is clearly the tricky bit!

I purchased a Samsung T5 1TB external SSD drive a few weeks ago and cloned my internal drive. I booted up the iMac and it was instantly more responsive. I was really impressed with the result. But then I started reading threads about Trim and how it can’t be enabled on USB external drives. So formatted the drive and reverted back to the internal drive.

If I run with the SSD am I just delaying a problem? The iMac runs ok now, but when I open apps it takes a while to open, whereas on the SSD... the app opens immediately after I release the button on the trackpad! So quick! If Trim is important will the drive just slow down in weeks / months to come?

Really not sure which way to go now as I like the speed of the SSD, but don’t want to have to revert back to the internal drive in months to come as updates won’t be up to date, if I buy / download / upload music onto iTunes it won’t show on the internal drive, etc. Am I better off sticking with a slower running iMac?

I am slightly (only slightly so please don’t shoot me!) considering installing Windows 10 on the iMac so I can play Command & Conquer which I was a bit fan of back in the 90’s. Will running on the SSD prevent this?

Many thanks in advance!

Don't worry about TRIM.
For most, it's a non-issue.
Just keep a reasonable percentage of the SSD "free" (about 8-10%).

I booted and ran my 2012 Mini from an external SSD for SIX YEARS... never had a problem and it always ran "up to speed". It's still running over on "the back table"...

Thanks for your reply! If I did fill up the SSD, and then remove the files would the SSD overwrite the “blocks”? (I know SSDs don’t have blocks but can’t remember what they’re called!)
