Hey guys,

In the next few weeks im going to upgrade my HDD. Should I go for a 60-64G SSD or the Seagate Momentus XT 250GB Hybrid?

Is there really that much difference in these two drives? My MP is fast enough tbh but to get that pace would be much appreciated.

SSD or XT

I have had both, although not in the same Mac Pro. The jump in boot times was dramatic on both. It really comes down to price and capacity, assuming price is not an issue are you OK with adding more drives for the capacity, which only you can answer.

IF all you do is boot the OS and run an app or two, and it all fits in under the 8GB (or whatever the XT has for SSD capacity), you may not notice much of a difference. Personally, I went with a 60GB OCZ and a 1.5TB WD at the same time. Running a business using pro apps (which I don't) would drive me toward pure SSD, personally.

I have not heard about failure rates on the XT (could be good or bad for all I know), but with moving physical parts it has to be much higher than just about any SSD.

Hybrid hard drives are pointless, its just a big cache. They're only good if you only have one drive slot. Since you have a MP you've got 4 slots, so get a good SSD and a $50 1TB storage drive.

Yeah, on that basis I might go for the XT as having the extra space for all my apps. I had a Crucial C300 in my old pc but it failed so I feel a bit paranoiac in that aspect when it comes to HDDs.

This. Just look at the test results. A standard 7200RPM HDD can be faster.

Even Seagates 750GB HDD is faster. The small boost added density gives you is greater than a small amount of flash on-disk. Pass.
