I will, sooner or later be buying a mac mini and, along with upgrading the RAM was planning on using a small, cheap ssd for the OS. I was wondering if anyone had already done this and if so, what the best size/type of SSD to get (remembering I'm not particularly rich) any help appreciated :)

I personally wouldn't go with less than 64GB...and that is if you don't plan on installing much software and keep all your data (music, photos, videos, etc.) on an external drive. If you can swing it, I would definitely get a 128GB SSD, so you won't be crunched for space as much.

If you plan on running any virtual machines or games, I would start looking more in the 256GB range.

SSD prices have really come down and if you can wait until the holidays, I bet you could pick up a decent 256GB SSD for ~$150, maybe less.

I recommend the Samsung 830. Excellent drive with excellent reliability. I've just reviewed one in my YouTube channel and recommend it highly. You can also safely and easily enable TRIM on this drive.

I have the 128GB, which I believe is the sweet spot.

Where abouts are you based? I may be selling mine (still boxed as new) and going for the 512GB instead ;)

Mmm, a 64gb one on crucial only costs £50, do you think I would need something substancialy bigger? I ably intend on getting minecraft, open office/word on it (the iLife package fur fills most of my needs) so would a 64gb ssd be big enough?

Just saw your post, I'm in wales :p the only thing that would put me off a big (512gb) one is A, would I need it? And B, how much (I'm not what one would call wealthy)

I dont really need a 512GB either, but I just want one! lol ;)
I may be selling my 128GB though in the next week or two if you are interested? I'll create a for sale thread over in the marketplace for it.
I live near London so postage etc would be fine......
