Plan is for new mini with os and apps on SSD, and my Aperture files on the HD. The question also applies to iTunes and FCP, for example, or any app that can build up a large library of content.

Is it best for such apps to live on the HD, or can the app live on the SSD -- and thus take advantage of the read speed -- without the related content files being, in the Aperture word, "managed"? Would Aperture still regard its library as its own if it was placed on the HD and the app on the SSD?

Basically, for those of you that have the hybrid configuration, what is the optimal setup for apps and content?

The apps are fine on the SSD. Your aperture library will by default be stored under your user home folder. That should be on the HDD.

I have a few SSD / HDD setups. For Windows 7 I leave everything default in C: on the SSD because it simply screams, whereas I use the HDD for recording HD TV and 1080p movie storage. My iMac is a little different as mentioned in the previous post SSD Macintosh HD is my OSX drive and I move my user folders to the HDD. I also have a large 480GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G in a 2011 15" Macbook Pro. This machine is by far the best to use. Large Aperture, iPhone and iTunes libraries definitely perform better on a SATA III SSD, but the cost is admittedly high to do so. The current generation of SSDs should not be a problem for daily use or production. See diglloyd's Mac Performance Guide for experience with SSDs and production photo editing. http://macperformanceguide.com/
