A lot of folks have warned that going with 8gb MacBook Air or pro will result in ssd swap and reduce the life of the ssd. But the question is how much life will be reduced and how much swapping would result in demonstrable reduction in ssd life. What are the numbers ?

The numbers are highly dependent on your workload, therefore nobody will give you a definite number.
The need of frequent swapping usually means the need of more memory, and if you use memory a lot, just get a 16GB one. Potentially longer SSD life is just a side benefit of that.
If even 8GB is too much for you then you don't have to worry about the lifespan reduced by swapping, it will be negligible .

SSDs do wear out over time. The life of your SSD will be reduced from "much longer than the life of your machine" to just "longer than the life of your machine."
