SSD versions not available! What to do?

I asked someone from Apple (via online chat), not much info, but here's what they said:

- You: I'm interested in buying an iMac (27" model), I've noticed the SSD option has a 4-6 week lead time, how come?
- Annie F: We strive to have accurate dispatch and delivery time. We are building the iMacs with the SSD option and it will dispatch within that time frame.
- You: Are you allowed to say which make/model of SSD will be used?
- Annie F: Apple never names processors or hard drives in the specs.
- You: OK, thank you
- Annie F: These is because they work with supplies to customise the part to the Mac. It would not be their standard part.
- You: ok
Need to find out if aftermarket install is the same as the old one, then I might just upgrade later.

Breaking open a new $1,700 iMac to install my own SSD scares me. I'm thinking of ordering a default config then adding an external SSD in a Thunderbolt enclosure later. I believe that can be used as the boot drive and then the remaining internal HDD could be used for data storage. Maybe mount the SSD TB enclosure on one of those stands that clips on the back arm of the iMac for a clean install.
I ordered the 27 base 1tb + SSD. June 15 ship and jun 22 deliver. 500 for a 256GB SSD is cheap. Also one that is supported by Apple via trim, does not void the warranty is a win win. Oh, and the 1tb only costs 100.00.
I asked a Apple rep and said those times are only rough estimates with a wide window. He said they should ship no later than two weeks.

This would be great for upgrades, but the blade SSD performance isn't that great compared to the new SSDs on the market that come in an HDD form factor.
Yup -- don't want to crack open a brand new iMac. Besides, the first time I try something (removing the iMac's display panel in this case), it usually takes me two tries to get it right -- the first time to break something, the second time to do it right. Besides, I know I'd get loads of dust behind that display panel that I'd never be able to completely get rid of. Unfortunately, I doubt that external Thunderbolt SSD solutions are going to be any cheaper (at least in the near term) than Apple's CTO SSD, so I decided to order the internal SSD and wait it out. Patience is a virtue in this case I guess.
I'm curious as to the reason behind the delay -- hopefully they're waiting to get some 6Gbps SATA-III SSDs in stock!

I understand that if I order mine with a SSD, the OS and applications will come pre-installed on the SSD.
Question: If apps are on SSD (iTunes, iPhoto etc . . ), where will the default file location be for my songs on iTunes and photos in iPhoto? Will the songs (iTunes) and photos (iPhotos) I add to the programs, be installed to the SSD or the hd by default?

you can make symlink of these folder in other to link the Itunes music & iphone libary to the Hard disk
meaning . . . by default, everything will be uploaded onto the SSD unless path is changed by the user for every app (iTunes, iPhoto etc...)?
It doesn't matter where the apps are installed, it matters where the Users (i.e. your home directory) is located since that is the default location for iTunes and iPhoto to store stuff.
If you want it, order it. The sooner you place your order, the sooner you'll get it.
My CTO Thunderbolt MBP15 shipped early (I was one of the first on the forums to get theirs), and I'm sure my decked out (DIYing 16GB of memory, kept it at 4GB) 27" iMac will ship early as well.
Though if you're spending that kind of scratch, upgrade the shipping if you're that antsy for it. $35 for 2-day, $50 for next day.

I see. . . . and the "users home directory" is located (by default) on the hdd and not on ssd?

In any case, it is simple to change the location of the iTunes and iPhoto libraries, or your entire home directory.
