I know there's a lot of thread about this,
Looking for easiest way to add ssd to my 2012 I7 1tb mm. I would like to use ssd for os and hdd for iTunes. The mm is new so I have not transferred my library to it yet. No time machine set up yet, and what's best easiest ssd to maintain for mm. (Firmware updates). I've seen all the stuff from owc, disk doubler and what not but I'm new to mac so I'm not sure what to do.

Buy the right cable and tools, cheapest on Ebay, around 20$ for complete set with free delivery.
Remove bottom, then remove airport grill.
Insert two gromets in side panel of Mini HD frame, and 2 threaded bars in side of SSD (both part of kit). To make insertion of the gromets easier, cut of 2 sides of the rubber ridge. If this is too complecated, leave the cursive part out.
Attach cable.
Slide drive in. Pop cable in main board. Attach 2 screws through grill.
Start Mini, hold CMD-R, start disk util, partition GUID, format ssd HFS+. Do fresh install. Run all updates. Use migration assistant to copy settings from the original platter disk. Change main boot disk, off you go.

I just ordered a Samsung EVO 250 (not the Pro) and plan to install it in place of the hdd in my brand new i7 mini, and keep the data files external. I got the mini from Best Buy during a 5X Reward Zone points weekend so the reward points plus price match with Newegg mostly paid for the sad. I also have 16GB of memory on order so the machine should absolutely fly compared to my old 2007 iMac that it is replacing.

I thought of getting the data doubler kit and adding the ssd to the existing hdd but decided against it as I don't want the spinning platter in the mini itself. I don't know if that's the right decision but it was the decision that I made.

The "easiest" way?
OK...

1. Buy either a USB3 enclosure that supports UASP (USB attached SCSI Protocol) or a USB3/SATA dock that supports UASP.
2. Buy the SSD of your choice
3. Put the SSD into the enclosure or dock (dock is the EASIEST way, takes 3 seconds to put drive into dock)
4. Connect enclosure/dock to Mini USB port
5. Initialize SSD with Disk Utility
6. Use CarbonCopyCloner (free to download and use for 30 days) to clone the contents of your internal HDD to the SSD
7. Open System Preferences and select SSD to be your boot drive
8. Reboot
9. Done.

I have mine set up with the 256mb 840 evo this way. It works fine . I do saturate the 3.0 usb at 5mb. You can get the full 6 mb with it installed inside.
