I am have an OTB 1.1.2 iphone, already activated with ATT. but not jailbroken yet.

I understand what SSH is, but do I need it to jailbreak my phone, and if I do, can I uninstall it after I am done jailbreaking?

SSH was a major breakthrough on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and was required n the beginning stages of jailbreaking.

Luckily for you, it is no longer required for the jailbreak process, but simply an easy way to access the root filesystem.

Some programs, like WiToggle and WiSync do require you to have SSH installed though, and its required for internet sharing.

If you installed, you need to turn SSH off or change default password.

A good reason to have SSH is to upload your (legit of course) ROMs for NES.

Lets say I install SSH when jailbreaking. Can I uninstall SSH and leave everything else that same? (as in, it wont effect my jailbreaking)

Yes you can you won't lose anything except you can't download any nes roms, etc. if you decide to download one. Oh wait, If you have 1.1.2 then yeah, wouldn't have to worry about SSH.

A better question is why you want to get rid of it. At some point you will need it to move files or icons or whatever to your phone and you can turn it off when not in use with Services. Its only 700k, the benefits of having it far outweigh the negatives.

But what exactly can I do with it? I really just want the basic Apollo IM, or iphysics, maybe some small simple programs. I wont be playing NES on it or anything.

Feel free to uninstall it, but you may have to install it again if you want to do anything beyond what installer offers. You dont do anything with it per se, but you need it if you want to manually transfer anything to your phone. For example, you have a theme going but its missing an icon. You found a different icon that you would like for that theme. SSH, while not being an application, allows you to sFTP the icon file to your phone.

True, but there are other ways of transferring things to your phone (drop copy, sharefile, etc...) if you really don't want SSH.

And a way around the icon situation, is to install MobileFinder, you can then change icons etc... in the iPhone's filesystem and switch them around.

(To get them, download them in installer.app or by using the RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING safari download plugin.)
