Hello,

I run a small network in my home. I have a desktop running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro and a MacBook that share files and such with it. I'm looking for a way that I can log into the Ubuntu system from the Terminal on the Mac, so that I can run commands on it (manage Ruby on Rails apps hosted on the desktop, mainly) without having to be in front of it.

I have the Ubuntu drive mounted on the Mac, and I can easily add/edit files on it through the Finder, but if I try to ssh into it using the mounted drive's name, the Mac doesn't recognize the directory. Is there another Terminal command that I can use, since the Mac recognizes the name of the Ubuntu system?

Also, I tried to ssh into the system using the IP address of the Ubuntu system, but then I get a "Connection refused" message.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

You may not have sshd (server) installed and running on your ubuntu box. By default it is not included in ubuntu desktop. So to do that, just do (on your ubuntu box):

sudo apt-get openssh-server

Then assuming your ubuntu box is called "ubuntu", back on your Mac you can do this:

substituting your ubuntu user for 'username' of course. And the actual name of your ubuntu box for 'ubuntu'. You need to keep the .local part to do a local bonjour lookup.

Or you can just do it by ipaddress like:

ssh username@192.x.x.x
