I'm asking because I recently had a boot jam(where the phone was stuck on the pineapple and wouldn't load). In the process of finding the solution, people kept referring to whether it had ssh or not... Implying that if I had it, there was a work around using some sort of network. Am I understanding this correctly? If so, what could I do to prepare myself for another mishap? Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read it.

they seem to have been asking you whether you had openssh-server installed and running. i doubt that sshd would have been started properly if your OS was locking at boot time, but if you can log into your phone over SSH you do have one more tool for troubleshooting it that could save you some hassle in the future. i believe there is a link to the SSH config howto on the front page of cydia.
They might have ben referring to the ability to SSH to the phone delete problem files when it is stuck. there use to be a fix along time ago forgot what firmware.
The short of it.
if you had WIFI set up and SSH installed then you could login to the phone and delete com.apple.plist or a spring board file and then reboot your phone and viola!! back to life.
The phone sticking was sometime a failure of the spring board plist being corrupted. Tried it once and it worked but I have not had the problem since upgrading firmwares.
Before I found the fix I just restored and rejailbroke. no issues.

Interesting... There's just so much to learn. It's hard to stay ahead of the curve. Just sucks not learning about something until After things get screwed up. Thanks for the info; I'll start reading up on it. Then again, I should probably start by reading something that'll help me understand what I'm reading.
I have had a similar problem with my iPhone and SSH. Only mine gets stuck when I try to turn off SSH. I open SBPrefs and tap the SSH button, then the chasing lines spin about two turns and BAM, they stop and my iPhone is frozen. I figured turing off SSH would save battery life so thats why I am trying to turn it off. I have successfully turned off SSH twice before. The last few times it has frozen. I have tried it with anywhere from 7MB of memory available to 52MB available. No luck.
Any solutions/advice?

Happens to me also. I screw up my phone and perform a search on various forums and bam some one has already had the problem and fixed it. It is usually after I have restored my phone 3 - 4 times when I could have saved the trouble.
I don't know about this one. I personally never turn SSH off never even thought about it. Just tried it and no issue. sorry.
i haven't used sbsettings to toggle SSH; i use bossprefs and it works fine.
you really don't want to leave SSH running all the time. openssh has had security vulnerabilities in its history (though not many), and even if you never run a vulnerable version of sshd, the only thing protecting your device from an attacker is the strength of your passwords.
(needless to say, if you haven't changed them from 'alpine' and 'dottie' you're in severe danger if you leave SSH running constantly.)

Ooops Just turned it off. Thanks for the info. I guess I never worried about it before. I will also be changing my password.
I was always scared to change it because of the early warning (before cydia) about broken password functionality in the Subsystem. Never gave it another thought after that.Ok... Reading you guys reply back and forth makes me feel like I was asleep when the professor said that the test is tomorrow. The weird thing is that most of it makes sense in theory, it's just the terminologies I have to get up on. Any suggestions for a good place to start??
