standalone Bluetooth / Airplay receiver (not express)

Hey there,

I've got an old school Apple hifi and I've realised I'm never going to take the time to connect my iPhone or Macbook Air when I want to listen to music so it really just sits there.

I'm wondering whether there's a cheap bluetooth or wifi airplay receiver that I can connect to it.

I wanted to check before I go out and get an airport express because that seems a little heavy-handed for what I want to do; the speaker is right by my bed and I don't need the printer or router parts of the airport express.

It seems like I should be able to get a mini bluetooth airplay receiver which I could just connect into the back of the hifi for bluetooth streaming. Does such a thing exist?

**small rant, bluetooth streaming is not airplay.


the only time i've used bluetooth to stream audio it didn't sound that great, granted it was in a rental car, but the sound quality was much worse than direct connection. in quick research i found this which says "but we should note that using Bluetooth causes limited loss in audio quality"
also bluetooth is limited to about 30 feet, which doesn't sound like it will be a problem in your situation

airplay uses apple lossless to transport the audio, so no quality lost from your original signal. and will work anywhere your LAN extends to.
also airplay offers expansion possibilities in the future, as you can stream to multiple devices from the computer, (but only one at a time from your iOS devices)

But, beginning to think I may as well bite the bullet and get an Airport Express.
