Standalone RSS Readers

I read TUAW a couple of times a day, and they routinely blog about a program called NetNewsWire ( link: http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=NetNewsWire ).

Ultimately, I have trouble understanding the need for a standalone RSS reader. Doesn't Safari provide enough built-in support for RSS? If it doesn't, then where is the "tipping point" where Safari begins to fail and standalone readers begin to shine?

Do you use an RSS reader; if so, which one?
Is it really worth it?
How many feeds are you subscribed to?

Help me, I just don't understand!

Safari provides very basic RSS support. I started off using Safari when they added RSS support (having never really got into RSS before that) then bought NetNewsWire as it's really that much better.

They have a trial version you can use for a bit to see if it's worth it for you...

I use NetNewsWire Lite (free) for all my RSS needs.

when I used Safari, I used the integrated RSS aggregator. Now that I'm all about Camino...I use NewsFire...only thing is that the developer is pretty smart and only limits you to 15 feeds and some nag windows until you register...it is the most beautiful of the RSS aggregators I have seen though.
