If you order online, I'm in the uk, a standard config eg a 27in i5 will you get the latest week build or can in be an older one sold off a shelf/warehouse somewhere? If people who have done this could let me know that would be great.

Gearing up to reorder after having 2 duffs from the apple store and getting refund, but thinking of going online next to get a hopefully problem free recent build.

Yes, but the advantage of buying from a store is that you can immediately swap a bad one - they just pull one off the shelf, instead of waiting for weeks on a BTO that needs to be built and shipped again. Some people have gone through 5-6 even 9 computers before they hit a good one... imagine trying to do this with 2-3 weeks between BTOs. Not practical. And in a store, if you really get lucky, you may test one right there before buying it - people reported being able to do that. Frankly, if it were not for the fact that I really want an i7 BTO, I'd love to buy from a physical store. Not to mention that getting one of the newer builds... well, you're not guaranteed anything. For awhile we thought week 50 builds were the ticket, then it showed they were worse than ever. Actually there are reports that week 41 builds were the best. And new builds coming seem to keep having problems. Bottom line: until there are very firm reports of problems resolved, buying new builds is not advantageous. And right now, they suck. If I were you, I'd stick to brick and mortar stores for now.

If it is Apple online store, it might still be fresh because they have more orders than computers right now.

Later on when supply catches up, even BTOs aren't guaranteed to be new production because they stock several configurations at Apple to have ready to send out.

Thanks for replies, I liked the idea of just going to the store too and there is one 15 mins away, but after lugging 2 27iners to and back it not so appealing! Also it never seems to be a quick transaction. I take the point about so far the new builds not being better but hopefully this will change soon and then getting a new build will be better!
