Hi all. I am using an iMac Retina 5K with Yosemite 10.10.3. For some reason all my standard mac programs like Calendar, App Store, Messages etc. are opening but then they are not responsive to anything and I can't close them unless I force quit. Been happening for a few days now and I have no updates pending. I think it might have started when I updated with Photos.

Any ideas? driving me crazy!

Thanks :)

A few things to try:
  • Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on the boot hard drive, reboot.
  • Create a new user account, reboot and login to the new user account. Does the issue still happen in the new user account?
  • Boot into safe mode (Hold shift-Key while rebooting). Login and see if the issue still happens. Reboot to normal mode when done.

Hi Taz, thanks for that.

I tried repairing permissions, did nothing. Logging in a new user worked. Rebooting in safe mode also did nothing.

I have recently started using a VPN, could this be the issue?

----------

I also just uninstalled my VPN software and rebooted, did nothing.

Try holding shift as you start the affected apps - this drops some of their memory of their last session (eg, Safari forgets the tabs you had opened, instead of trying to reload them).

Failing that, a permissions issue is still a strong possibility, but since the issue doesn't occur in a new user account (indicating the fault is in your main home folder) and Disk Utility's "repair permissions" function only affects system files (as opposed to anything in a home folder...), you may need to try correcting them manually.

If you Get Info on your home folder (highlight it in Finder and hit Cmd + I), down the bottom is a Sharing & Permissions section. You need to make sure your account is listed there - it should specifically say "(Me)" after it - and that the privilege level next to it is Read & Write. The other users / groups listed don't matter so much, but should be set to Read Only.

Assuming that all checks out, there's a button at the very bottom of the panel that looks like a cog, which should have an option to "Apply to enclosed items". That takes a while to complete (a few minutes, usually less than a dozen), but once it's done, reboot and see how things go.

You may need to click the little padlock in the lower-right and enter your password before you can make changes.

At this point it's about narrowed down to a corrupted setting, and I'm thinking the common factor is "use of an account" (the problem being less the account itself and more the set of config files that tell your system to use it). If you go into System Preferences and check out the iCloud panel, is that signed in? How many accounts show up in the Internet Accounts panel?

Also, can we get the complete list of apps which are affected? In particular, can you test the Keychain Access utility?
