Just wanted to check with all early adopters..

The stand-by mode, how does it work on Non-Pro models? If the phone is connected to a charger, do I still need to tap to see the time/screen or it can remain on ?

thanks.

How do you enable standby mode? I missed the keynote and I have been trying to figure out how to turn it on

iOS 17 iPhone StandBy: How to use and customize

  1. Make sure you’re running the iOS 17 beta (install guide)
  2. With your iPhone screen locked, place it in landscape on an upright charger (the mode won’t work on flat or low-angle chargers or when your screen is unlocked)
  3. iPhone StandBy will automatically appear – the feature is enabled by default
There should something under settings

You need to keep phone in a horizontal phone and if i understand correctly, connect it to a magsafe type of charger. then it works. Haven't tried -- need to wait for public beta to come.

It doesn't even need to be a Magsafe charger—any wireless charger where you can leave your phone horizontal but upright seems to work.

Doesn’t even have to be a wireless charger!
Just did a quick test with my 11 Pro plugged in to a wired charger 😁

it also worked on my tested XS Max device when plugged with a lightning cable. I cant test it for long because the brightness always turns entirely off and I have to grab the phone back and slide the brightness up each time. Surely a bug.

Yep - same here. iPhone 11, only charger I have is the USB one that came with the phone.

As long as the phone it kept pretty still and close to vertical, it works. It's a bit glitchy, but still very usable. Of course, with no AOD I have to give the phone a tap when I want the display to come on for a few seconds.

It reacts to background light levels too, dimming the display as required. I like it.

It seems there may be a little "hack" to keep the display on without AOD. Start playing something in PiP and then go in Notification Center and enter standby, the screen will stay on until the PiP video stops. If you don't want to hear the video make sure volume is turned down. Not sure if it's a glitch I have but it worked on my phone.

Very clever. I wonder if that would work for the SE too

I'm glad that Standby will work on older devices (I have an iPhone 12). Can someone confirm that you can set up the widgets so that the clock is not one of them? I have a stand that puts my phone and watch next to each other I use by my bed, so really don't want or need the phone to show the time. I'd rather use the phone for things such as Homekit controls, weather, calendar, and the like.

You can just swipe between various screens which display different information. Keep in mind the screen will not stay on with iPhone 12, you will have to physically interact for the screen to stay on.

I had heard somewhere else that the iPhone will wake with the slightest motion sensed, same as Nightstand mode on the Apple Watch. Even the 14 Pro models turn off AOD in Sleep Focus. Frankly I prefer that, for my devices to be generally off overnight, but really easy to wake with just some shuffling in my bed.

I can't seem to get it to work on my 14 pro - I just get a black screen after the battery char indicator in the corner popped up. I've tried a myriad of setting combinations to get the same result

Odd, my test 11 won't display even though options are enabled, either on Qi charger or Lightning cable :(

My iphone SE does this

Doesn’t seem to work with my Nomad wireless charger, but to be fair it’s a flat charger. Not a big deal, I have my Apple Watch on all the time anyways.

It will only work if the phone is (A) charging, (B) oriented landscape and (C) is standing up perpendicular to the surface. It will not activate when laying flat. But it will activate when attached to a lightning cable as long as its in the proper orientation.
