I thought I should be able to have different standby setups based on where I dock it? Currently I have the Belkin 3in1 MagSafe charger and nomad MagSafe charger. Whatever I change the standby settings on one seems to follow me to the next one. Am I missing something?

How… would it know which charger you’re using? 🧐
From apple

“In each location where you charge iPhone with MagSafe, StandBy remembers your preferred view, whether that’s a clock, photos, or widgets. This means you can have it set up for family photos in the kitchen, or an alarm clock at your bedside

Hmm… location services, I guess? I can see how it would know my home from my office. I don’t think it can really tell my bedroom from my kitchen, though. Primary location for indoors, is the WiFi network- which is the same throughout the house. GPS really requires a sky view.

It knows that you attach it to different MagSafe devices. That’s all it needs to know.

Maybe only on Made for MagSafe certified chargers? Those have chips inside where the iPhone presumably can communicate and identify.

The other ones are really just Qi with magnets. The iPhone only negotiate the power inputs with it electrically.

Every MagSafe-compliant device has a unique serial number (visible in Settings -> About -> Charger-name a minute or two after connecting) which Standby should use to determine which device it is connected to. This includes third party MagSafe compliant chargers. It’s stored in an RFID tag. Standby also treats all non-MagSafe chargers as one specific additional “location”.

However the feature is unreliable. I have one MagSafe charger which it will remember the settings for, and it remembers a separate mode for wired charging, but I have another of the same make and model of MagSafe charger that it simply will not remember any settings for. It simply uses whichever settings it had on its previous charger.

Quick Q, has anyone actually had this feature behave as intended? I’ve seen a lot of places mention it in round ups etc. off of the support page but nobody seems to have actually, y’know, used it successfully.

It probably has to learn over time, rather than a binary “it was set to this last so it will be that next time” kind of situation.
That’s how it behaves for one MagSafe charger and for lightning, it just always remembered what those were using the last time it was connected, from minute one. For the other MagSafe, nothing.

Apropos of nothing my second charger’s firmware updated from 241 to 275 today and now the feature works perfectly on it. Just automatically goes to the last-used settings for each particular charger as soon as it connects. Nice.

8 hours per day on charge and it took about 3 solid weeks to update. Clearly when the Apple support pages say it takes a week for MagSafe firmware to update they mean, like, 168 hours of connection time.

So uh if this isn’t working for you on a newly bought MagSafe charger, just wait it out.

This whole StandBy feature does not work for me on my only MagSafe charger (also Belkin 3in1). Every night it shows the default widgets not the one I set.

Does not work for me. Any Apple info?
(with a Belkin 2-in-1)
Found it: >About and it shows up about 2/3 of the way down the page.

By the way, you can connect the MagSafe charger to a MacBook and it will update by itself within minutes.

Could it be that it's not a genuine MagSafe one? Just "magnetic Qi"?

It’s possible that they dropped the feature and forgot to update the article

I remember reading an Apple support article that said the HomePod Siri volume adapts to the environment, but that feature later became possible and displayed the toggle for it years later
