I'm using GMail in Mail on the iPhone through Exchange, and I can't figure out how to star messages without them leaving the inbox at the same time. I guess I need to copy them instead of move them? Is there a way to do this with the iPhone, or get GMail to change it's interfacing with Exchange?

Star Messages in Mail with GMail

Yes - this is annoying. Using Gmail via Exchange does not star messages if you flag them, it marks them as unread. If you set up Gmail via IMAP, then you can flag/star messages, but lose the ability to push.
Here's what I do:
On your computer, go to Gmail via the web. Unders settings/inbox, add an inbox section for ALL STARRED. This will create a separate list of starred messages above your normal inbox. Any starred message, regardless of folder or label will appear here.
On your iPhone, if you get a message you want to star, move it to the "Starred" folder under [Gmail]. Technically, this moves the message out of your inbox, but thanks to your ALL STARRED section above, you'll be able to see all your starred messages anytime you log into Gmail.
Otherwise, if you don't set up the separate inbox, messages starred via the iPhone will moved out of your inbox, which in my workflow, means I never see them again.

Bleh, so basically there's no real solution for this? I could mark them as unread, but that gets sort of annoying, as I'm constantly remembering the number of unreads that I have. How slow is IMAP? I thought IMAP is push where POP3 isn't? Exchange is pokey as it is, it's like 30 seconds behind at least.
If you setup your Gmail account through GMAIL prompts on the mail settings page, it's being set up as IMAP. And it can't push, only fetch as pre-set intervals. And that uses more battery than Exchange.
So yeah, there's no real solution. For me, the battery life of PUSH is more important to me than being able to truly star messages via IMAP, and the technique I described above works for my needs.
Alright, I'll have to do that, as that's basically what I used to have on the iPod.

Actually, if you use the Flag function in IMAP, it works fine. Looks like problem solved!
Yeah, I just tried it and Apple doesn't support Push IMAP on GMail. GAAAAA. That, and they don't support pulling every minute (although that would probably destroy the battery). Apparently Apple just hates stars.
For now, I guess I'll just leave GMail up in Safari so I can star stuff and have full GMail access if I need to. I wish Google would write full GMail for iPhone, but I guess they want to keep that an Android exclusive...
