With Yosemite, I find that if I do a restart, I have to select my identity, enter my PW then wait for nearly a minute before I'm up and running with my various programs loaded. Is there a way (yes, I tried System Preferences, and don't see an option) simply to allow this to open up after a restart and bypass the ID screen?

Same works in yosemite. But for me under automatic login I can only select guest and not my main ID. Maybe cuz I have icloud password not sure.
But give that a try and tell me if you can select your id and it works or not.

Don't know about the iCloud thing. But if FileVault is enabled, you need to unlock the drive first to boot, so, a login screen. And since it appears that Yosemite tries to turn on FileVault during the install process, can see what's possibly happening.
As for "Automatic Login" setting: it's greyed out on my machine, running FileVault. Which makes sense re: above.
