Start of Battery swell? + pics

I've had my SR MacBook Pro for a little over a week now and have started to see something happening with the battery. Health reported at 99% and mAH is in the 5000s. It is a small opening near the LED meter. Does this look normal because of how small it is, or should I get this checked out?

I don't have a MBP battery to make a comparison, however I do know that small fit and finish problems like that are common. As long as you don't experience any real problems from it, I wouldn't worry too much.
 
Personally speaking, if that was mine I'd be halfway back to the Applestore now

I'ive had my MBP for about 7 months and it is much the same as this. Although there is nothing major, the battery does not quite sit flush with the case in the middle of the edges of the battery (1mm ish MAX - just so you can press it down, and when you run your hand across you can feel a slight edge). I would call this normal, there is bound to be a bit of movement with the heat contractions and extractions, on mine and it looks like yours its just the top grey layer that has come unstuck a bit in the middle allowing you to press it down opposed to any real visable battery cell swelling.

I think I am convinced that this is normal. The size seems like normal expanding and contracting.

However; just to make sure you don't end up getting burnt run it across an Apple Store (if you live close to one). It will make you feel safe! :)
 
A lot of them are this way and never experience any swelling problems. That said, if you take it to an Apple retail store, chances are good they'll replace the battery for you.
 
A battery shouldn't be expanding or contracting in the first place. I'd bring it back.

Remember folks, we shouldn't 'forgive' Apple for making a mistake on these machines--we should return them for even the slightest imperfection. We're paying over 2 grand for this, it SHOULD be perfect. And unless we speak out and return these things, Apple is going to continue getting away with selling us faulty products (and at premium prices, nonetheless) and won't fix anything.
 
I'm no scientist and probably wrong - but don't things expand/contract when they go from hot and cold and vice-versa? That sounds like a battery's operating conditions. My iBook's battery has never been flush with the case, hasn't really bothered me.
 
You might have a defective battery. Like another poster wrote, take it to the Apple Store soon (as in now!).

all posts like this are quite frankly ridiculous, this battery is COMPLETELY NORMAL. My macbook pros battery is just like this and there is nothing wrong with it. Those that say that you should take it back are seriously delusional, although it is not wrong to demand quality and a 'perfect' machine, in production models that are manufactured in their millions a 1mm offset is bloody good. I have attached a picture of my battery that is totally normal, and if i took that to an apple store asking if it was swelling they would laugh at me and they would laugh at you too!

I don't think it's completely normal. His case is popping upwards. Over time, this could become worse. My battery does not do this, and I suspect that many others would agree with that.

Just becaue his battery doesn't look as bad as the one's you have attached to your post, doesn't mean that his isn't worthy of replacement. And in case you aren't good at size comparison, his battery was far more than one milimeter out of alignment; it is at least one centimeter (possibly a little more) off.

If an Apple Store employee ever laughed at me, I would take his/her name and report them to SJ himself. They're there to take care of customer issues, not to trivialize a real problem.

OP, take that battery into a store ASAP.

Ok this is just stupid, although there was a problem with the batteries there is now basically no problem and defective batteries are now even rarer than they were.
Athough there is some minor 'swelling' on this battery if you could call it that, it could simply be due to an uneven surface, maybe the top sheet was slightly curved when they applied it to the battery and with used the adhesive has been able to hold it down properly in the middle (there are a whole host of reasons that this could have happened within the normal manufacturing process rather than it being a defective battery).
There is nothing wrong with his battery, it doesnt bother me if he takes it to an apple store but it will be a wasted journey. You always here the bad things on these forums as people dont tend to post that much about their machine when everthing is fine and for good reason as the huge majority of them are. This leads to a hightened sense of paranoia amongst forum members (I had this myself when i got my mbp - checking every inch for defects) but its really rare that there are any problems due to the quality manufacturing and high levels of quality control.

To the poster i am replying to. I have attached a special picture just for you. Although his might be a teeny weeny bit worse than mine, it is still only 1 to 2 MILLIMETRES http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millimeteroff at most! if you look carefully at the picture you will see a big white thing called a ruler, and it is used to measure things. Kindly buy one and familiarise yourself with it and its workings before you accuse me of being bad at size comparison. If the battery was at least 1 centimetre off (n.b. battery width 1.3cm) then he definately would have a problem and I would urge the OP to take his battery in.

to the OP, by all means take your battery in if you feel uncomfortable. However I strongly suspect that you will be told that this is a total non issue and is well within normal manufacturing limits.

Mine looks exactly like yours, 00hkelly. If I start to experience decreased health, mAH, or it gets bigger, by all means, I will take it to an Apple store.

Mine looked EXACTLY like that, and a few days after I noticed it, my battery health went from 100% to 40% (I've had it for a year and only 60 cycles). I called Apple and they overnighted me a new battery.
 
Hey all,

I wouldnt fool around with a battery like that I would get it replaced it might leak in the future you certainly wouldnt want that:eek: and besides you only want your mac to be perfect in every way I mean this isnt a windows machine after all:D

You could be right, the battery might just be like that and there is nothing wrong with it and it might never explode or whatever would happen. However do you really want to risk that? Afterall, Apple did recall quite a few batteries a few years ago, and there have been ongoing reports of MacBook Pro batteries swelling. Maybe you would, but some of us drive in the slow lane and rather be safe than sorry :p Besides, it is a $2000 USD investment we made on the system, would you really want to see it go up in flames?


For me personally, I would be worried, but I wouldnt call it it immediately. I would probably keep track of it and see if it swells even more, if it does then I would call it in. Luckily, mine sits relatively flush with the laptop :)

His is worse. Your battery is somewhat uniorm in its bending. His is not. I'll concede that maybe his battery is not a full centimeter off, but even 1.5+ is good enough when the bending is uneven. To me, it seems as if the heat is being concentrated too heavily in one place. Next thing you know, his battery will be exploding:eek::D

OP, care to measure how bad the swell is for us? It would really give us a better idea of just how bad this is.
