Hello there

How much time does it take for the Mac mini to show the desktop, once you turn it on?

It takes 22 seconds (i7, 32GB) from pushing the power button and for me it is really disappointing... It is only 4 seconds faster than base Macbook Pro 2017 (it was starting faster before switching from HFS+ to APFS).

How could it possibly be faster than a 2017 macbook pro?
it has marginally faster RAM and same speed disk. CPU is better but not that better.

mini: i7 6-core 3,2 ghz desktop cpu, 32gb of ram
mbp: i5 2-core 2,3 ghz mobile cpu, 8gb of ram

I thought the new mini has bigger advantage over mbp. So, for now, it is better to use sleep mode instead. Or to be patient.

I don't know where I read that and i can't find the article, but OS (any OS) has to load a bunch of small files when it boots and somewhat faster CPU and somewhat faster drive is only a marginal improvement for that type of operation.

In fact, more RAM (if it's the same speed) usually means longer boot time because of self-diagnostic it makes every boot.
So having 32GB of ram at 2666 MHz will take a bigger bite out of boot time than 8GB at 2133MHz.

The boot time over my 2012 rMBP quad-core/16gb isn't improved by much either. And it can't be as it stands currently as far as I know.

It certainly isn't as clear cut as - more CPU + more RAM == automatically faster boot, it's a little more complex than that.

someone with more insight into OS inner workings will probably explain it better, but that's the gist of it

Is there a way to know what is booting and which element is taking the most time in a boot sequence?

By the Time it Boots I have a head of Grey Hair!! :D

Let me Check; grabbing stopwatch: 19 seconds from power on to desktop.


Windows 10 Computer i5 2500k @4.4 Ghz 16/512 = 19 seconds as well

To put this in context my base 8 year old iMac with an SSD and 20 gigs of RAM running High Sierra boots in 19 seconds. :)
 
I'm not really sure why anyone is that bothered about boot times if I'm being honest. Mac's are meant to be used in sleep mode not regularly shut down. I run mine for months using sleep mode and the only time the machine is rebooted is for something like security updates etc.

Why get hung up over things that don't matter?
