Hey I noticed the starting price listed for the 17" MBP is listed as $2799 on the apple site. And yes when you go to price it out the initial price is $2799, but notice what happens if you change from a 1gb stick of ram to 2 x512mb of ram...instant $100 price drop.

Crucial hasn't updated there site yet for the 17" MBP but I imagine taking that $100 to them will get ya closer to 2gb without dropping the $300 - $400 apple is charging.

EDIT: Ok looks like the 17" takes the same as the 15", so 2 x 1gb stick cost: 308.98.

With Crucial 2 x 1gb sticks of ram from Crucial
So $2699 + $308 = 3007

With 2 x 1gb sticks of ram from Apple
$3,099.00

hmm ok, may not be worth while
$2799 (with 1gb stick from apple) + 154 = $2953

I guess if you have no need for more than 1gb of ram you can save $100, but if your upgrading it's not worth while.

I got mine for $2498.76 shipped.

Here are the specs:
17" 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processor
1gb of ram
Superdrive 8x
Accessory Kit
100Gb 7200RPM HD

That's less than the edu discount, how did u manage this.

Speaking of RAM and slightly off topic...I ordered 2X256 sticks of "Apple RAM" last week for testing and it was shipped in Apple packaging from guess who's address?

Crucial.

I just worked it out and it's only a 10% discount, that's not a lot.. if you pay for the ADC Select ($500) you actually lose money!

Student developer is only $99. And it's a lot more than a 10% discount. You were looking at the normal .edu prices. Go check out the hardware purchase prices off the ADC page. Definitely worth it.

Isn't there a $500 annual fee associated with the developer program? So how much are you really "saving?"

Developer details

It was a Student Developer discount($99). It took about $400-500 off the final price. THat final price included tax.

If I would have just used my Educational Discount I would have had to pay $2,819.92

Without any discounts it would cost $3,036.92

BTW, I'm sure you noticed that buying APPLECARE is a $100 CHEAPER if you use the student discount (compared to ADC)

Is that final price inclusive of tax?

Yep, I sure did. Thats why I plan to purchase it later. Isn't it weird that it is cheaper that way?
