I need to start getting wireless service but I want to use my current unlocked GSM phone until the next iPhone comes out a few months from now.

Does anyone know if AT&T would let me do a few months without contract and then sign up for (getting the discount on an iPhone) one later on?

I know they let you continue on without a contract after your contract expires. But is there a way to get service before signing a contract? The prepaid plans don't seem to have data, but I would like to get 3G data same as an iPhone (only right now I have an unlocked Nokia smartphone).

you know, if i were you, and the tmobile coverage is good where you are, i would just sign up with their 'even more plus' plan. it's month-to-month and when the new iphone comes out you can just switch over to AT&T to get it. T-Mobile plans are cheaper and your GSM phone would likely work with them.
