Hello everyone. I just want to let you know that I am really thankful for your help.

This is a 3-year old iMac version 10.4.11
I upgraded Safari as recommended a few days ago, and since then, Safari has not worked at all. At the same time, I was warned that my startup disk was full. Following the advice from some other mac help sites, I cleared the copies of my iTunes library to free space. I now have 6.72 Gigs of free space on my hard drive, but my computer is still running super slow. Just about every other thing I click on in Firefox gives me the rainbow wheel.
I ran Techtools and everything passed but the Directory Scan and Volume Structure. I would be happy to copy those messages for you if that would help.

As soon as a friend can loan me a hard drive, I was planning on backing up everything and re-installing. Is this the best thing to do, or is there something else to try first?

Thanks everyone!

Repair permissions, etc. If that doesn’t work you either need a larger HD to accommodate your stuff, or you need to clean install.

Why aren’t you running leopard/snow leopard?

I bought this computer right before (literally two weeks) leopard came out. I'm a broke college student and I couldn't afford it at the time.

I ran repair permissions and I haven't gotten any rainbow wheels yet, so far so good. Thanks.

this is weird, your the third person today that has talked about their computer being slow...with the reason being, insufficient hard drive space.

you need at LEAST 25 gigs of free space. I know from experience. my computer was dog slow. i couldnt figure it out. then i came across a post about how the OS needs at least 15 Gigs of free space. in my case, my system needed more like 25 gigs of free space. look it up if you dont believe me. but basically your computer is topped out. your drive is crammed. 6 gigs is not even close to being sufficient.

I've just gotten the same problem

after updating Safari. Several programs now give me 'Installer Quit Unexpectedly' error message. Could an Apple update have scrambled a few bits?
