Startup Wars (With Movie)

I figured this was interesting seeing as me, iAra, and skoker were all in the same place today each with his own (or in my case, two) mac(s), we decided to have a startup "war".

(iAra and skoker with all the machines).

Here's the deal on the machines we used:

Machine 1: iBook G3 900MHz 12"
About 24gb free on HD

Machine 2: iBook G4 1.33GHz 12"
About 2gb free on HD

Machine 3: MacBook 2GHz 13"
About 12gb free on HD

Machine 4: iBook G4 1.33GHz 14"
About 30gb free on HD

Now Machines 1 and 3 are mine, machine 4 is skoker's and machine 2 is iAra's. Now obviously out of most of the machines we figured the MacBook would boot to the desktop the fastest (due to being Intel), and that the G4's would follow. But to our surprise the iBook G3 (as you'll see in the movie below) beat both the 12" and 14" iBook G4's and it even had less RAM (384mb vs. 512mb), all running the latest version of Tiger (10.4.7).

So, after a few test runs on my bed I figured seeing as we were going to the Apple Store later that night anyways to put on a show for anybody who wanted to watch, so we went to the "theater" (which is being converted to a studio at the moment) and put all four Macs in a row and boot them, we even had an employee ask if he could lay in front of all of them and strike a pose for the camera.

Anyways, so here were are results in order of 1st to boot to last to boot:

MacBook 2GHz 13"
iBook G3 900MHz 12"
iBook G4 1.33GHz 12"
iBook G4 1.33GHz 14"

Sadly the G3 beat out both G4's which means in terms of people I had the winning machine(s).

Anyways, here's the movie of what we did in the Apple Store, and due to being shot with my digital camera it's not the best audio quality and there are slight jumps in the video, but you at least get the point.

Yep, that was fun. I was just surprised to see that the G3 beat my G4, but that macbook without a doubt is the fastest laptop I have ever seen. It was funny seeing all those guys at the apple store looking at us.

Lot of them were actually like really interested in it, and so were some of the customers who thought twice about walking in front of me while filming that .

In my collection of six 'normal use' Macs in my house, the MacBook Pro comes first, then the B&W G3 (w/ 500 MHz G4 upgrade,) then the iMac G3 600, then the eMac 1.25, then the 12" PowerBook G4 867, then the iMac G3 233 (last because not only is it horribly under-equipped with only 96 MB of RAM, but it's running Panther while the rest are running Tiger.)

Sorry, they're scattered throughout the house, otherwise I'd do a similar video. (The best I could do is get the MacBook Pro and PowerBook next to one of the others.)

It's funny, though. The B&W G4 500 MHz boots 10.4.7 faster than the Celeron 2.4 GHz right next to it boots XP SP2.

Although the fastest booting computer in my house is my IIfx running System 6.0.7. It's at the desktop before the monitor has warmed up enough to show a picture. In fact, it boots from cold-off faster than my MacBook Pro wakes up from sleep!

It surprises me the PB doesn't take 2nd place...but otherwise that's neat, lots of Macs.
