i'm having the same problem on a macbook c2d 2.0, 2 gig. when any application plays sound i get a terrible static through my speakers that does not change relative to me adjusting the volume. the speakers are not blown because the static is not always there and when it's gone the sound is fine. ideas?

Speakers can be blown but not necessarily have static 100% of the time. Do you have external speakers or headphones you could test your drivers with? If you have Boot Camp, do you get the static there too? :)

Okay, well if it were a software (driver) issue it would probably (not necessarily) continue to be static in the headphones and external speakers. I think you might just have a dodgy speaker which you might want to get Apple to look at. :)
