Stay Away from Mountain Lion it RUINED my MACBOOK Pro!

Two weeks ago I bought a copy of Mountain Lion. It refused to install on my Macbook Pro because it conflicted with Lion. My computer got caught into a conflict loop and refused to start. I ran it a couple of times but it kept timing out, then it caused bad sectors in my Hard Drive.

I took it to the Apple Store, the "Genius'" fixed my Hard drive, but that was it. I took it home and formatted the Hard Drive, still the same issue. Found a copy of Snow Leopard and that isn't even compatible with my Macbook. WTF??????

All of this wouldn't be so frustrating if they actually sold physical copies of their ***** OPERATING SYSTEM! HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, Apple and their Digital Only BS. How am I supposed to download your software when it ONLY runs on YOUR computers and it was YOUR software that f'ed my machine in the first place?

My only option now is to go back to the stupid Genius Bar - nearest Apple Stores are an HOUR from my house in either direction! Drop it off and hope they'll install the stupid operating system for free. All of this because Apple is run by a bunch of *******s who think they know what's best instead of giving customers a choice. I'm NEVER buying another Apple product, even though technically I need it for work.

what do you mean, you 'bought a copy'? you mean you downloaded it from the app store? how did it 'conflict with lion'?? what's a 'conflict loop'? what does that mean? how did it damage the hard drive, causing 'bad sectors'?

am a science fiction fan, so i can at least appreciate your story...

My new $500 Windows Machine works! And if something happens, I have a PHYSICAL copy of Windows that will allow me to EASILY start again. I don't think it's too much to ask that I be able to BUY an OPERATING SYSTEM at THEIR store? Why is that so UNREASONABLE to apple lemons? Just because Apple says that's the way it is, doesn't make it RIGHT!

You can make a bootable copy of the ML installer. Apple can't please everyone and others have stepped in with instructions on how to make the installer bootable.
I'm sorry your computer is having issues, but Apple is not perfect and sometimes computers have problems. It happens.

Not having physical copies is one of the reasons why I stuck with SL. Apple's pushing for an all digital world that isn't quite ready yet, particularly if their stores or authorized places to take them don't exist in some areas.

If you have an external disk and can boot into Lion I'd recommend doing a clean install there, migrating your stuff over, wiping the internal clean, and then cloning the external with Carbon Copy Cloner. Sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I would be interested in how the ML update caused bad sectors on your HD
And how an Apple Genius fixed it
Can you elaborate on that at all?

Also, you can create a physical copy of ML to install as others have indicated
I haven't followed the process myself, but others seem to have no issues doing so

You were able to buy physical copies of Lion. It came on a USB key. You could also make your own in 10 minutes for no extra cost, provided you have a USB key laying around.

You can use the same process for mountain lion.

Google is your friend.

And hey OP - recovery partitions exist for a reason, you know, for recovery. You can download and clean install from the recovery partition.

seriously...if you had bad sectors on the drive, that could cause a problem installing a new OS; but the damage would be on the drive BEFORE the install...the install itself would not do it...

You are of course correct. BUT in this case, the drive was healthy and perfectly fine before the install and I use DriveGenius.

The way it's going I think it is great. 2 - 3 hours to download rather than waiting for delivery in 2 - 4 days. It's been the easiest way of setting up, installing an OS to date that I can remember. The only thing I can say is it just feels so weird not having any boxes, manuals or official hard copies except the USB stick that I had set aside for it.

Plus the fact booting from the USB stick it took no less than 5 minutes to do an erase then clean install. It was like I had no downtime.

Personally, I think this release has been sublime. I really like Lion as well but Mountain Lion just feels so special.

My only gripe is doesn't matter if it's OS X or Windows. I detest spending all my time setting up all my apps and settings for Photoshop and many other things. Thats the only thing I detest with clean installs.

Anyone that was rash would have researched this rather than going on a keyboard rant. I spent most of my time backing up clones with superduper and preparing the install.

Have to admit though, that branded key came with a scandalous price.

The OP should have checked the SMART status under app profiler/system report. Or console, under fsck_hfs.log as well as checked with disk utility. It's all about preparation, is it not? if a hard drive is going to go or play up, it will no matter what OS is on there.

Even when I'm not installing an OS, I check this from time to time. That and to make sure the filesystem is clean. Maybe once every 3 - 6 months. Plus that I've got clones of Mountain Lion, Lion and Time Machine ready to go.

If the drive is supposedly fine, I'm beginning to think the filesystem structure of Lion was partially messed up and something was triggered by the install. Even though it appeared fine to the OP before all this started.

Regardless, the tone and the anger and panic from the OP does not strike me as somebody thats thorough and has had anything planned out.
