I have a phone-less iPhone. It was "fake" activated using Independence back when 1.0.2 was the firmware. I did not unlock it as I don't use it as a phone.
Since then, I installed AppTap and a bunch of apps.

I have 4 questions:

1) Is there a downside to upgrading to 1.1.1?
2) Is the phone in danger of being bricked in someway or have all those problems been solved?
3) Is it possible to restore my phone back to its virgin state at 1.0.2 if I move to a hacked version of 1.1.1?
4) If I upgrade to 1.1.1, if I ever want to legitimately activate my phone and use it on AT&T, can I still do so?

Thanks!

1) Is there a downside to upgrading to 1.1.1?

Not really, some people reported worse battery life, but not for me. The iTunes store is a great addition for 1.1.1

2) Is the phone in danger of being bricked in someway or have all those problems been solved?

If you have never unlocked your phone you are in good shape, it won't brick.

3) Is it possible to restore my phone back to its virgin state at 1.0.2 if I move to a hacked version of 1.1.1?

A simple restore in iTunes will bring your phone back to factory state. Downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 involves quite a few more steps but 1.0.2 offers no real benefit now compare to 1.1.1.

4) If I upgrade to 1.1.1, if I ever want to legitimately activate my phone and use it on AT&T, can I still do so?
Yes, it's a matter of doing a restore and you can activate through iTunes.

So to be sure I am clear on this...
I have an iPhone that came with 1.0.2. I used INdependence to activate it, and I never unocked it or used it as a phone. I have installed various Apps with AppTap (now called Installer).

1) How do I upgrade to 1.1.1? Do I just go through iTunes? and say yes when it asks me to upgrade?
2) I assume I then use INdependence as before to reactivate? Or does my phone remain activated when I move to 1.1.1 on iTunes?
3) If I want to restore to factory state, how does it know that my state is 1.0.2? Do I need to save the 1.0.2 firmware file and restore with that later, if I ever want to downgrade?

Thanks so much for your VERY helpful responses!

Yes, either click update or do a restore.

Your phone will be need to be activated again after you upgrade to 1.1.1 because it will just show the emergency call screen. In 1.1.1, the best way and easiest way to jailbreak is AppSnapp, http://jailbreakme.com/. It doesn't get any easier than that. Make sure to read the "Access Safari on unactivated phone." http://www.modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Jailbreak_the_iPhone_1.1.1_out_of_the_box has a great guide as well.

Downgrading is a bit more complicated, but really, why? ;) Do it only if you have a bricked phone and you wish to downgrade your baseband. http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.php/Downgrade_Baseband_1.1.1_to_1.0.2_OSX

Thanks for your help.
One question- I want 1.1.1 but iTunes wants to give me 1.1.2.
Where can I d/l the 1.1.1 firmware since AppTapp is only available for 1.1.1 jailbreaking?
