Staying with AT&T?

Simple Question,

I'd like to purchase a iPhone without extending my current contract with AT&T. What steps do I need to take once I purchase the iPhone?

Specifically what software/hacks would I need (I have both a Mac and PC)? and would I transfer my SIM card from my current AT&T phone?

Finally, should I wait for 1.1.3 to come out and/or how will this effect me when it does.
