Steam crashes constantly......Can anyone help??

Hiya, I installed steam when it was released last week but so far I haven't been able to play anything at all.

I downloaded Portal (eventually) and when I run it it gets to the grey loading screen and then just crashes and won't go any further.

I have re-downloaded the game and the client but this does not help.

I have a 3 1/2 year old C2D 2.16ghz macbook pro with the ram upgraded to 3ghz a (when the valve screens appear I always have the spinning beachball)

Can anyone shed any light and offer any advice (or is this meaning I need to upgrade my MBP)

I have a 3 year old 2.2GHz MBP (2 GB, 8600GT), and have almost finished downloading Portal (my internet sucks!). I'll give it a go late tomorrow morning when it's finished (will download the last 800 MB of the 3.8 GB game tonight) and see if it works for me.
