Im having the same troubles and its quiet disappointing, especially since iv played TF2 and portal and counter strike before on my mac using Crossover games and it worked just fine.

there is an extension missing on the apple drivers for the 7xxx series of nvidia drivers that they need to run the source engine properly.
They have said that if the driver is updated they wil be able to support those cards.

Among the more interesting details:

-- Requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher
-- Intel-only
-- Source games require 10.5.8 or 10.6.3 or higher, and are not supported on the X3100 or 900-series Intel chipsets (the integrated graphics chipsets in older MacBooks)
-- You will not be required to purchase separate versions of Windows and Mac games. One purchase will work on multiple platforms
-- Steam and Source will run natively in OS X -- no emulation whatsoever
-- Source will run on OpenGL

They also won't run on an NVIDIA 7600 in my iMac. This is extremely annoying because I ran Portal, FROM STEAM, on the Windows side using Boot Camp. So clearly it is not a hardware issue.

SO ANNOYED!

I imagine it has something to do with using OpenGL vs. Directx, or using Crossover/Wine for some games. I doubt they'd cut out possible players without reasoning behind it.

Beyond all that, the 7 series card is over 4 years old now, which is an eternity in the GPU world. Maybe it's time to consider an upgrade? :)

The Mac Source engine requires OpenGL extensions which are not available on the Apple GeForce 7 driver. This situation could change, but that is the situation presently speaking.

The Orange Box itself is about 3 years old

<-- FAIL

I have the same hardware, and I'm also disappointed. I played the Orange Box from Boot Camp very nicely, too. I'm thinking of selling my Mac Pro and 2x 24" displays in favor of a new i7 iMac. The new hardware is necessary to play any of these games, and it seems to be a fair amount faster than my quad 2.66.

Of note is the post from one of the developers:
The GeForce 7 driver doesn't have the OpenGL framebuffer blit extension, which is required to make the Mac Source engine work.

The same issue applies to the GMA 950.

If that capability were to appear in the OpenGL driver that Apple and NVIDIA provide, we could support that chip, assuming no other major missing pieces were encountered.

Fails on 2007 white iMac

Same gfx card error message as in the image above. iMac Core 2 Duo from mid 2007.

Just as well I installed it under the Guest account and no admin password was required - one click logout, and it's completely wiped from my system!

Barry.
