I downloaded steam for mac, but for some reason everytime i open to try to login, it thinks im offline? How can I fix this?

Apparently some people have found that uninstalling Peer Guardian helps here. I found that the client update I got this morning fixed it.
Its a hunk of junk so far for me. Downloaded the DMG, dragged to apps. Fire it up and it does it update and crashes at 28mb of 33mb. It then starts again and gets to 7mb of 13mb and crashes again.
Looked on the Steam forums and see lots of people having the same problem.
What was the BETA actually for then?
