Hi there,

I was wondering, if I buy a game from Steam now, can I download the Mac version when it's out or will there be a deferent pricing for 2 platforms games, I'm thinking of getting the Half-Life bundle.

Depends on the game, but at least all Valve games needs to be bought just once and you can play them on both platforms. So, if you buy Half-Life 2 now, you can play it on Mac when it comes out. It's not yet sure if Half-Life 1 is coming to Mac though.

You'll need to buy the other version.

I think the *correct* answer is that nobody knows all of the details.

If you buy Half-Life 2 / Portal / Team Fortress 2 / etc on Steam ... then you can get the Mac versions of those FOR FREE when you login to your Mac Steam account. *That much* we know ...

... but as far as I know there haven't been any other specific game announcements since the initial Valve release.

If you want the full HL story I'd recommend HL1: Source too, but they haven't announced that for Mac yet (even though it is a Source engine game).

I agree - and really hope that they DO bring HL1 along for the ride (heck, I'd pay $10 again if needed!) ... but that was why I said we don't know yet. And it is only a few weeks to wait ...

Thanks for the info guys, I've plaid all of HF parts before on my old PC but was thinking of trying it on mac, maybe I will buy portal. The main reason I want to buy one is that I want to support Valve for making Steam for mac lol.

I recently ran through HL1... on Steam. I acknowledge I'm repeating myself but that is the best solo FPS I've ever played. It's a real adventure! :)

I started it but the physics seem really wonky to me. I guess I have to try it out...

Remember it is a 1998 game and that we were really just a year or two into full 3D games ...

HL 1 was never in my top few FPS games, but regardless it is an absolute classic, playable on anything (my last play was on netbook) and definitely worth playing.

To be fair you have to be able to give the game a bit of a break due to it's age. I first played it when it was about 3 years old. It's not nearly as polished as HL2, but it's a great game if the dated graphics don't get you down. And it flows smoothly into HL2 which is an outstanding and somewhat shocking continuation of the story.

OP, go buy! I recommend The Orange Box to start with. That contains HL2 and all its episodes, Portal and TF2 and it's very cheap too. If you want the full HL story I'd recommend HL1: Source too, but they haven't announced that for Mac yet (even though it is a Source engine game).

When you buy Half Life complete, it seems to be missing HL Lost Coast, which is included in the Orange Box and valve complete collection. Weird...

HL1- those were the days. I had a job at my college's computer lab. 5 hour shifts spent playing HL1 online. Sniping folks with the crossbow :) I got sucked into the online and it ended up being 2 years before I beat the game's story mode. Still hazy on it...since I did finish it in like 99 :D What a great game.

Around that time was also playing Shogo. Where'd that one go? :(

I downloaded the Lost Coast just then, didn't see why not. It's free, and only took like 25 minutes to download, it runs pretty bad compared to CS:S :(.

Lost Coast was one of the first glorified 'tech demo's' (as basically that's what it is) that used the new (then) feature of HDR lighting.

It was heavier on the source engine than either the original Half Life 2 and CS.

Half Life Episodes utilise HDR but source engine had more tweaks improving performance of HDR.

Valve already announced that their first party catalogue of games will be playable on both Windows + OSX from a single purchase via a new feature called Steam Play. However its up to other developers and publishers whether or not they want to support this feature for their own games. Some are probably gonna make multi-OS users buy them twice.
