The steam servers are constantly "busy", and I am unable to run Portal. I have already followed these instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5483-YUFN-0521
,but to no avail.
Yesterday, I was able to run Portal once, but the game crashed while loading the main menu. Since then, I have been constantly receiving the "too busy" error messages. Even at 10PM on May 12, when there were the fewest users logged on that day, Portal would not run.
The game will verify its files in a suspicious jump from 0 to 100 % completion, and then "too busy".

- Helpdesk ticket I filled out 2 days ago, no response as of yet

Anybody else have this problem? More importantly, how do I fix it?

But people flocking to the service ISN'T the problem. I was able to run it during a daily peak (>2Mil users), but other than that, no dice.

CDN's are localised, maybe the nearest to you was flooded with downloads?

Try changing the location in your steam options. People used to do that during heavy steam downloads like whenever L4D1 or 2 was updated with new content. It can slow down your speeds but it helps.

Alright...
So I fiddled with my download region for a while, and decided to try it out in offline mode. Still didn't work, but I continued to get the same "server is too busy" messages, while I was offline!

I'm getting the same error when I try to play, even though the download itself was quite fast.

If this issue was more common, I think we'd see a fix quite soon; but hardly anybody has our variation of the problem.

Same issue here and no fix found :(

I am having the issue with portal launching, it downloaded relatively fast (as our friend above stated.)

I think I fixed it

OK- after being annoyed with Steam- I realized that there must be an issue with how Steam was downloaded onto my computer. Playing Counterstrike back in the day- I realized that my steam launch was way way too fast.

Now- I have deleted Steam by dragging it from applications folder then redownloaded it. When I downloaded it- no change and I must of had some information stored else where in the computer because it my game library acted the same way after reinstalling.

OK- deleted everything again BUT this time I did a spotlight search of "steam" and found a folder called "Steam Contents" (something like that). I found in that folder the log in info and such. I deleted this folder too this time.

Went to Steam website- downloaded steam again. The big breakthrough is that it actually takes time like it should to validate game files. Next I went to library and while it said Portal was there- the "install" button was here now instead of "play". I am currently installing it and I think it will work due to it actually downloading! I'll update if I get it to work but it seems like this fixed it for me.

Nice find JJ! It sounds like you fixed it, although I'm reluctant to delete things unnecessarily; so if it did work please report back.

Worked!

OK- I have been playing Portal for about an hournow on 3 different log in attempts and have not receved that dreaded message. I must say- I did download portal again and received that messsage after all my excitement. I by accident went into prefrences and deleted Portal through steam by accident. I then down loaded it again without havng it pause or any disruptions- and when it was finished- it worked. I just tried it for the hell of it and it still works. Download times are long considering the size of the file so be patient. Overall- I'm glad to play portal and now wish I had a serious graphics card.

I wish everyone the best of luck!!!

Ran the console, and found the source of the problem (quite possibly)!

SteamRefreshMinimumFootprintFiles() error: SteamProcessCall(WaitForAppReadyToLaunch)(0xab04c9,0xbfffd098,0xbfffcf8c) failed with error 116: Cache needs repair

SteamProcessCall(RepairOrDecryptCaches)(0xab04ca,0xbfffdd38,0xbfffdc2c) failed with error 15: Cache Read Failure

These are the two messages that show up. Anyone know a fix?

just wanna say hey, since im new to the forums, and add that i'm having the Exact same problem, when launching portal, steam fails to launch and complains about steams servers being exceeded, whether im connected to the internet or not. also to be noted, that a "validating successful" dialog box appears after the message for busy servers appears, even though portal is never launched :(

It sucks too, because im figuring portal stops being free on the 24th, and later today (wednesday) more games for mac are to be updated so i really hope this problem can get solved or goes away

if theres anything i can do, any data i can pull up thats helpful please lemme know!

I've been using Steam for ages on Windoze, and had this problem with Peggle (It's about a 10 meg download). I tried downloading it on release day and got a server too busy error. When I tried to download it again, I got the same error even though I could download other games.

I solved this problem by deleting the GCF (Game Cache File) or NCF (dunno) for Peggle. On the mac, these files are located in ~/Documents/Steam Content (Documents/Steam Content in your user area). These files are safe to delete (I think you can also copy them to another system to save redownloading) and Steam should detect that they have gone and show the game as no longer installed.

Quit steam, then delete the relevant ones for your game (Most non-Valve apps just have the one. I'm not 100% sure which of the support files go with which game, although I'm pretty sure Portal uses and shares all the source*gcf files with the other source apps). Then relaunch Steam and try and relaunch the game.

Fixed issue

Deleting and re-downloading Portal worked for me. An old school and basic fix but it worked

same thing

I downloaded it and was playing Portal all day yesterday on my Mac Pro; I tried starting it up again this morning, and nothing. Steam's been 'connecting me to my account' for 15 minutes now; should I just scrap the whole thing and redownload, d'ya think?

Is this during login? I'm pretty sure it's a separate issue anyways.

im havn the exac same problem. its the most annoying thing in the world

i tried deleteing the blob and what not...no luck

tried changing servers

still nothin. i tried using other internet connections....nothn

i sent a report...nothing...

i dont wanna have to redownload anything other than steam!

wtf man!

So after a LONG time, I fixed it (a few days ago). Turns out my GCF files were corrupt. That seems to be another common one from what I've seen. Go into: <profile name>:library:application support:steam
and get the .gcf files that are causing problems in a backup folder.

Well... I can't even log in... I've reinstalled it like 3 times an still no luck. The first time it came out I was able to log in and download portal. But now, I can't even login to the game library. It won't even make me go to the offline

Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem, but with a different error:
30-05-2010 12:31:48 [0x0-0x6c2ec28].com.valvesoftware.steam[55558] Steam error: SteamProcessCall(StartLoadingCache)(0xab0448,0xbfffbd88,0xbfffbc7c) failed with error 1: Failed to create directory //volumes
30-05-2010 12:31:48 [0x0-0x6c2ec28].com.valvesoftware.steam[55558] CInstallSubConvertApps::OnTick() : app convert failed, with steam error:
30-05-2010 12:31:48 [0x0-0x6c2ec28].com.valvesoftware.steam[55558] SteamProcessCall(StartLoadingCache)(0xab0448,0xbfffbd88,0xbfffbc7c) failed with error 1: Failed to create directory //volumes

Stupid software needing case insensitive filesystems.

I think i got a workout!

CHANGE YOUR DOWNLOAD REGION

Try changing your Download Region to see if it affects the issue:
ON WINDOWS

Start Steam
Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads tab
Under Download region, select a different but relatively close region.
Try launching or installing the game once more
ON MAC

Start Steam
Click on Steam > Preferences > Downloads tab
Under Download region, select a different but relatively close region.
Try launching or installing the game once more

Works great for me! :)

May apple be with you :apple:

Sooo removing the .gcf files work

Buuuut, the problem is for me is trying to figure out what .gcf files you need to remove. So far I've just mostly removed all of my .gcf files from tf2, but right now it seems to just take a while to load as if it's downloading, instead of letting me play the game. Is there anyway I know which .gcf files are corrupted, or do I just have to remove them all, and just wait?
