The Witcher: Enhanced Edition only to find that it does NOT work on my Mac Pro, black screen loads of sound and a hand pointer thing but nothing else.

Seems loads of people are complaining about this either NOT working or crashing all the place, keep away from this one is my advice here.

It might be cheap but it don't work, well for me anyway.

System

Mac OS X 10.6.8

2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3

ATI Radeon HD 4870

You might be able to fix the problem the same way I did using the Wineskin app contained within the Witcher app's package contents.

First navigate to where your Witcher app is. Probably something like <username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/the witcher enhanced edition. Right click on the Witcher app and select "Show Package Contents". The open the Wineskin app and select "Set Screen Options". Make sure "Override" and Rootless (windowed) is selected. Also select "Virtual Desktop at:" and set the resolution in the popup menu to something equal to or below your display's current resolution. In my case I set it to 1920x1080 which is what my display is set to. Finally in the Installer Options section of the window make sure "Force normal windows" is selected. Then hit the done button and quit the Wineskin app. Now try launching the game (I can't remember if I had to do a restart or not.

For whatever reason this worked for me and aside from an occasional crash the game ran quite well for me. It's a great game and I finished it. If you get it to run it will probably be the best gaming deal you'll ever get at $2.49. I paid $10 which was still a steal! Good luck!

Wow. Glad to see there is a fix out there for some of these problems. Not so glad to realize steam is just selling Mac apps as wineskin wrappers. If that's the case, why so few SteamPlay enabled apps? If they can just chuck the Windows game into a Wineskin wrapper, why aren't all/most of their software SteamPlay enabled?

Hmmmmmmmmm.

Thanks for the update, I'll have to watch for it because I purchased it the other day for the $2.49 price; just haven't installed it yet. :D

They're not just selling games as Wineskin wrappers. Some are, some aren't.

OK I managed to get this working.

My last recoarse was to remove everything Steam from my machine.

I then re downloaded it and then downloaded The Witcher, once downloaded I clicked on play, black screen no wait it sprang to life, yea, The Witcher is running. Do not know if I will get the crashes that some are getting though, I will give it a workout later, at the moment so far so good :)

Mine just finished downloading (about 36 hours). Runs right out of the box! Some of the defaults had to be tweaked down to get a proper, consistent framerate, but it's awesome on my 2012 13" base MBP with integrated 4000HD iGPU. So, I imagine anyone running 2011 or 2012 hardware should have no problems with this game.

I quite agree, the games that are just thrown into a Wineskin should come with a warning and a comeback if they do not work.

its mainly they didn't do a good porting job. Wineskin is not a point and click and it works porting tool, it can take a lot of work. They needed to have tested it on a wider range of machines and added work-a-rounds for specific issues and such... it could have been made MUCH better. Theres only so much I can do in Wineskin generally to help, and the game maker really needs to spend the time customizing everything to run right.

Ask the developer directly; ask other people who've bought the game and know enough to tell you if it's been done with Wineskin; buy it yourself and look.

Yes, quite. So, in order for me to know if the game is native or ported prior to purchase, I just need to buy it and look. Why didn't I think of that? :p

In the end, it doesn't really matter. As long as the thing runs, it runs. A rose by any other name . . .

Yes, because clearly that was the only option I suggested, and also you're seemingly unable to think of anything else. :p ;) :D

I think more games are native than ported, but that's just me. There's probably a resource somewhere on the web that tells you.

OK, I gave The Witcher a run this morning and it just keeps crashing with unexpected Wine errors :(

Trying this now, I got as far as Show Package Contents, you then say open the Wineskin App, cannot seem to see that or find it ?

Any extra help would be good :)

EDIT: I pulled all the game content from its folder and just play it offline, all seems OK, fingers crossed.......
