Steaming Music to Apple TV & Airport Express

Ok I can not believe that this is not possible and am hoping someone can help me out.
I would like to be able to play the same playlist in the same order on the Apple TV (hooked up to living room stereo) and to a Airport Express for outdoor speakers - how can this not be possible.

Not sure whether it is, but if it isn't, you could always plug your computer directly into the stereo and do it that way - you then get the option in iTunes for 'multiple speakers'

Paul, what makes you think that this is possible? I can't figure out a way to make it work except that already offered by Gee.

When you ask TV to stream, iTunes does not see the device as external speakers. You can play from iTunes to your AE outdoor speakers, but the music will not be in sync. What is streaming to TV is not necessarily what iTunes is playing and sending to the speakers. To have the same thing come out of your living room and your outdoor speakers, you must play from iTunes and send through 2 AEs, or plug directly into your stereo and use the outdoor AE.

I don't think it will work. Streaming to the airport express is different than streaming to the apple TV. When you stream to the airport express you are actually 'playing' the song in iTunes sending the media in small packets to the airport express (the true definition of streaming). Like a radio station, your computer plays music, then any airport express can listen to the music.

When you 'stream' to the apple TV something different is happening, the actual data file (mp3 or w/e) is being streamed to the apple TV, stored on the apple TV's memory, then played through the apple TV's controls. the computer you are 'streaming' from acts more like a server that holds data until the apple TV requests that data. similar to watching a movie 'on-demand' on cable TV, the movie sits on the cable provider's network until you request to watch it.

my suggestion would be to use 2 airport expresses, or totally hack into the apple TV and write a program to act like an airport express. i bet that could be done if someone really wanted to.

I had a bbq this past weekend and did this very thing. I created a playlist and then put it in the order I wanted it, so it would not have to be shuffled. I then synced the playlist to the Apple TV so it would be on that hard drive and pulled the playlist up on the Apple TV and began playing it. I also played the same playlist from iTunes on my Mac to the Airport Express via Airtunes which streamed it to my outdoor speakers. I cranked both sets up so that I could stand on my back porch and hear them both and then paused and unpaused the Apple TV until they were virtually synced. It wasn't perfect, but when I turned the music back down to regular levels, I noticed that I could go from inside to outside and hear the same some playing at the same point. To my knowledge they never got out of sync. i.e. the streaming wasn't adding larger gaps between songs or anything, but it was a bbq so I wasn't paying attention the whole time.
