Hi all,

I'm looking at updating my 4,1 to Catalina and I want to confirm the steps necessary to do that. FYI, my 4,1 has been flashed to 5,1 and is currently running High Sierra. It also has a single processor (W3680).

Having read this thread for updating to Mojave, but not having seen equivalent instructions for updating to Catalina, I decided to post a new thread with what I believe I've gleaned to be the right process. Are the following steps correct?:

1. Convert boot drive to APFS using Disk Utility. (I will be using a SATA HDD connected directly to SATA port on motherboard.)

2. Ensure that my 4,1's BootROM is MP51.0089.B00. (I believe I already did this when updating to HS.)

3. Shut down the Mac.

4. Remove the GT 120 and install Metal-compatible GPU.

5. Boot up the Mac.

6. Download Catalina installer from App Store.

7. Use Catalina installer to update BootROM to 144.0.0.0.0.

8. After BootROM update, quit the Catalina installer.

9. Download @dosdude1's Catalina Patcher.

10. Follow @dosdude1's video instructions for using Catalina Patcher.

11. Complete Catalina installation.

Did I leave anything out or add any unnecessary steps?

Also, does anyone happen to know: Once Catalina is installed using @dosdude1's Catalina Patcher, can I install incremental updates directly from Apple? What I mean is, if I were to use the patcher today to install 10.15.2, will I then be able to download and install 10.15.3, .4, .5, and so on, as each version is released, directly from the App Store? Or would installing each of those version releases require the use of the patcher?

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it. :)

I saw the thread I was looking for after posting this

Thanks for that. After an initial read it looks like more than I want to get into.

I'm wondering if updating to Mojave would be better. I tried downloading the installer from Apple's website link that redirects to the Mojave App Store page, and when I click on the "Open" button, the error message shown in the attached screen shot comes up. I noticed the button says "Open" and not "Download" as it does on the Catalina App Store page.

Does this mean Mojave is no longer available to download?

Remove from all your disks, yes external too, any previously downloaded Mojave installers.

You probably have previously downloaded Mojave somewhere on your storage and this version have the signing certificates that expired October 24.

You can always download Mojave from the Apple support article

Yes, thank you, I forgot I had already downloaded it some time ago -- on my work Mac, which is where the error came up. It's sitting right there where I left it in the Applications folder. :)
