Suppose an iPhone6S+ needs replacement and everything stored in it is needed to be transfered to the new iPhone device. What are the steps one must take in order not to miss anything?

Do a backup to iCloud or an encrypted backup to a mac with iTunes, this will pick everything up just fine. Done this twice now with the 6S+. If you have a watch, unpair it first to ensure a backup is made and then restore when you have your new phone. Really simple process and should be pain free.
